Re: looking to buy a stihl saw 14-16" 10% off at dealer tomorrow, recommendations?
Sorry I missed this thread. My wife and I have become chainsaw addicts. Who would have ever thought it especially about her. One day while using my faithful Echo 550 that I have had since late 70s my wife said "I would like to try using a chain saw so I could help with the clearing." So I thought , no way with her weak wrists and hands, but I didn't want to just blow her off on that so I shopped for a light weight chainsaw that would actually function as a real chain saw. Wound up with a Stihl ms192c. WOW, than thing was one slick little saw. For limbing, brush, and even firewood I could do so much with it because of the light weight. And to beat all I got my un mechanically inclined wife trained to the point that she could start it on her own, and do some serious tree trimming and felling. She loves it. After I saw that she was taking serious exception to me using that saw when ever she was wanting to use it, I was back to the Echo which weighs about 17 lbs. I said I have to have something better, so I got to looking at something stronger than the ms 192C but only a pound or two heavier and I came upon the MS 241.
I can do nothing but rave about that saw. I can whip it around like a youngster, and it has great power band. It never gives a hint that it is not going to start. Just pull the rope and there it is in a perfect idle from a cold start or after a grueling session cutting a stump at the ground. Let off the trigger and she just idles. And when it is pulling it seems to settle in to the pull different. I can't exactly explain it but it just hunkers down into a smooth pull and doesn't fall off on the torque like none commputer saws.
On top of that it sounds like a BMW a deep growl rather than the banshi scream of the MS 192C or my echo. The lighter weight means more than I could have imagined. A pound or even a few ounces of weight difference can make a world of difference in how much you can do in a given time period. The pro saws have a higher power to weight ratio and that is the money difference. It is hard to be sold on the money difference until you have actually used a light weight pro saw.
My son originally was telling me that the pro saws are just a waste of money but after using our two he has changed his tune. He still cannot believe I actually got my wife to the point of actually getting real work done with a chain saw all on her own. I credit the lovely manners of the MS 192c for that.
My son has several Stihl chain saws and is a kind of Stihl fan boy but when he used my wife's MS 192c he wanted one so we sold him ours and we then bought a ms 193c, the newer replacement. It is also great except it is a little soft on the trigger when want to do light cutting and trimming where you are always letting off and back on. It somewhat feels like it is smothering but otherwise it cuts as good or better than the ms 192c. Then when I get the MS 241C my son tried it and now he says these two saws are what he wants in his stable after years of using the bigger saws.
The MS 241 is pricy but I doubt seriously you would regret it if you actually used one much. A story I thought ought to be told.
