Loose Cutter on Disk Harrow

Is that the unit with sealed bearings.. or the one with grey iron bearings?

If you are lucky.. the drive shaft is fine.. nd the square opening onthe disc flange has rounded out. Either way it needs to be fixed, as it will grove the shaft if it spins freely.

It was a cheapie, so I doubt it had sealed bearings. At any rate, it certainly doesn't have them now! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

We have some cloudy weather moving in in a day or 2, and I can work on it without having a heat stroke. I'll take my great big ballast stump off the unit and pull that axle and let y'all know what I found. I've got a feeling it won't be pretty.

I guess I can run without that cutter for a little while until I lay hands on a new cutter or axle as the case may be.

Solved the mystery!

The center broke out of the cutter. No damage to the axle at all. I simply fitted the broken part back in like a puzzle and put it on one of the center positions where the flanges are large enough to cover the broken out center. It should last until I can get another cutter.

It all sounds so easy, but it was a real pain in the posterior. Although I used penetrating oil, I still wrung off 2 of the 1/2" carriage bolts that held the bearings to the axles. Every darn bolt galled, and every nut was hard to take off. The square heads on the carriage bolts all stripped, and I had to snap Vice Grips on them. The VG's kept un-snapping... well, you get the picture. Guess there's no such thing as grade 8 carriage bolts to replace the dead soft junk. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
