Loss of power

When you loose power, does black or grey smoke pour from the exhaust? That fuel filter is super easy to swap and super cheap. It's available at your local parts store too.

Thanks Guys,

Called dealer. He thinks it may be the fuel filter. I unthreaded the drain plug on the bottom and let some fuel drain into a mason jar. The fuel is clear but there was an initial batch of brown crude in jar - dirty filter? It starts up fine, no smoke idling or under pressure.

It may be a bad batch of fuel. I helped a neighbour farmer about a month ago and he filled the tank for me with fuel. I was down to about a 1/4 yesterday when all of this started happening. I put 20 litres/3-5 gallons of fresh stuff in this morning before going to my buddies' place. Barely got there and barely got home.

The dealer is coming by next week to replace the filter. I will drain tank - guess I will have to write off the fuel - and replenish.

Hopefully it is fuel. Other than that it has been running great.

TIA

Thanks all... couldn't wait for dealer to try and fix this. I didn't get a filter but did the following.

Kiotidave, I completely drained tank. I also took hose of pump - a little bit of brown gunk
came out. I submerged filter in diesel fuel and put back on. When I emptied the tank there was a considerable amount of water coming out towards the end. I filled with new fuel and let it run for 10 or 15 minutes. I ran down the lane and did my usual return in 4th gear. It didn't bog down as much and I didn't need to shift down.

Hopefully it was just a case of water in the tank settling at the bottom. Do they make a filter that can separate water from fuel like you would see on a power boat? They usually have a glass or see through plastic bottom with drain you can open to let the water out.

I will have dealer go through his routine next week and replace the filter. I will leave it parked till then.

Thanks all...

I would expect the OEM filter and bowl assembly to be a water separator. As in, the bottom of the clear bowl should show visible water if there was any.

HBeam,

My filter has a plastic white bottom that threads into the filter and a hose attachment on the bottom of the plastic unit.

I will take pics and post later.

I know this is off topic but if you do a search on the fuel filter housings you will find a few threads about trouble they were having with the white housings developing creaks and leaking" not the clear one"
Just a note of interest.

Chances are the new replacement fuel filter could/will plug up. Cheap insurance, after the dealer changes the fuel filter, buy a second fuel filter as back up.

Chase and Tb,

I think that is the next plan. Once the warranty is off I will be doing my own maintenance.
It is a challenge to get service when needed - on site. To deliver my unit is a 2+ hour drive and is out of the question for now.

My brother in law is a heavy equipment tech/mechanic and I do have the shop manuals and parts manuals so hopefully between us we can solve most problems or do pre-service more often. Of course the dealer is a back up if there is a major issue.

Dealer tech dropped by today.

A number of factors:
1/ fuel filter
2/ Fuel conditioner
3/ Brake adjustments - he adjusted the brakes at the last service and may have over adjusted them.

All is well for now....
