Loss of power

So, helping out a neighbor and he kindly put in fuel? Sounds like he put in some fairly yucky stuff!!! No good deed ever goes unpunished.

So glad for you it's OK now. +1 on doing your own service on simple things oil, fluids, filters etc. It's your tractor and no one will do a better job doing these things than you. A little help from your BIL is a plus.

Ok... it happened again.

Tractor has been working great. Started the other day to do a job for a couple of friends.
Loss of power under load. If the tractor is stationary there doesn't seem to be issues: ie;
made it to site, set rpms and worked the BH. Made it home... loosing power, about 1/2 mile. Bleed filter. Started to other site... seemed to work fine(about 5 mile drive) halfway there problem starts again. Made it to site, set rpms and worked the BH no problem... just made it home - loosing power.

Called dealer they are thinking about it... gave up and went to the cabin for the weekend.
Got home today. Took the fuel line off from tank to fuel feed pump thinking it may be water issue. A bunch of brown gunk and a piece of hay/fibre came out of pump. Drained a bit of fuel into a clear glass jar - fuel looks clean - reconnected. Went for a quick drive no issues. Will try a longer drive tomorrow. I let the tractor warm up before driving. It starts up fine, idles fine, no smoke from exhaust.

When I look at the fuel line hook up, the line goes from tank to fuel feed pump, fuel feed pump to filter, filter to injector pump. The cause may be the fuel feed pump getting fouled from stuff in the tank.

I just checked the shop manual and it confirms this layout.

I think the filter should be inline after the fuel comes from the tank...

Will update tomorrow.

Egon,

Fuel from Esso. The funnel I use does not have a screen in the bottom. I checked the two yellow fuel containers - they are clean inside. I will buy a new screened funnel today. I need to get more fuel. Also, I have been using the Kioti fuel conditioner...

I am thinking I might put a small clear in-line filter between the tank and the fuel feed pump. Is this a good idea? The fuel is gravity feed to the fuel feed pump.

That should work Lloyd. Might consider adding a petcock valve so you can also drain off of the tank bottom.:)

Could the brown stuff be coming from a fuel filter.

I`m getting my fuel from the new Esso in Bridgewater. Supposedly they have up to date water sensing instrumentation in their tanks. I`m not sure what kind of traffic volume they see.

All our diesel comes from Irving in New Brunswick.:)

Egon,

The tank feeds the fuel feed pump before it goes to the filter than to the main injector pump.
So the dirt is coming from the tank and clogging the little fuel feed pump. The line comes up at about a 45 degree angle to the pump and is gravity feed... I think when I am driving on the road it is causing the dirt to move from tank to pump. When I am using an implement the tractor is not moving and is getting fuel. A tiny piece of dirt and piece of straw/fibre was pulled the from the pump... seems to run fine... will take for a little drive today.

Took the tractor for a drive... abut 3-5 miles, bumpy roads. No issues. I called the dealer and left a message regarding my discovery. Mechanic was out but called me back just after 5PM. We discussed adding an inline gas filter. He felt it would not create a problem for the
fuel feed pump. I see this as a design flaw. There should be a filter from the tank prior to any working parts. I chatted about this with several diesel owners including boat owners and they are puzzled why there is only one filter. Their experience with diesels is that there has been two filters within the system... even my furnace which uses oil... similar to diesel has two filters!

Onward...

My bota only has one filter but our ford 250 has two with a water separator. I agree with you a water separator and filter before any pumps should be a no brainer. You might also want to pick up a tube of water sensing paste. $10 for a tube that will last you a lifetime. smear a bit of the yellow paste on a dip stick and put to the bottom of your tank. Stuff turns bright red in the presence of water. (It's used in gas stations on the end of stick they use to "stick" the tank. Since the water will always be at the lowest point you just need a little bit on the end of whatever you're sticking the tank with.
