KK, here's a link to my thread long ago about losing my Golden male.

I know it's been quite a while but I'm sure Austey still finds his way into your thoughts. These dogs are so very special and they just steal your heart.

I appreciate the compassionate responses from TBN members you received - and they continue for me now. There is just something inherently good about a person who loves their pets.

It's a problem with these wonderful guys: they just don't live long enough.

I've thought the best way to honor a dogs memory is to run out and get another and my current strategy is to get a young dog or pup when the older dog hits middle age. In this way I hope to never be dog-less again this side of the Resurrection.

Before losing Maggie, we had 5 dogs and 1 cat. Along with those, we will often take in rescues while they recover from illness or injury - and we also take in pregnant mothers in order to keep their puppies out of kennels that can be high risk for parvo. One of our current dogs is from one of those litters, a litter of 13 pups!

We love all our dogs. There are some, however, that really grab your heart for some special reason. Maggie was one of those and I just ache with the loss. I will absolutely miss her for the rest of my life. When our family has had time to recover, I'm sure we will be blessed with another addition to our home.

Maggie was a very lucky girl to have had you by her side and known you as her human.

Today is the third anniversary of the loss of one of my guys. I still feel the pain of that loss, especially today.

I have always liked the following, and in Maggie case, I am certain that she is waiting for you.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I tell my 9 year old daughter, when she asks about dating, "When your 24, find a man who loves his Golden Retriever, and try to find your way into his heart, and you'll be good as gold." :) Everyone knows the best men to date are the one's who love their Goldens.

Every time I see " Rainbow Bridge" I think of all the good dogs I have lost over the years. I do hope that one day I will see them all, but one most of all. That would be my old K9 partner Kaiser. After his retirement he was always a true family protector, playmate to my children, and traveling buddy. He is gone almost 20 years now but there is seldom a day that goes by I don't think of him. At work some of the old timers, like me, still have a laugh over some of his stories.

So sorry to hear of your loss KK. The patriarch of our farm is a 4 year old Golden, "Riggs". One heck of a great dog. Sadly, he's huge and has been his whole life, which has contributed to hip and joint problems. It hurts to see him struggle to get up at such a young age.

That's a good point but I tell my daughter to take my 100 lb German Shepard with her to chaperone!
