Sorry for your loss at such a young age. Been there many times. We have an aging Min Pin going downhill rapidly. Even with seven other dogs, it's not going to be easy saying goodbye to the "mouth" (yap, yap, yap, lol).
Though not the same, we had a young horse with an invasive tumor in her nasel system. Though the chances were minimal, we put her through the op and followup care only to have the tumor rebound. In the end, it is sometimes better to let go then to put an animal through so much pain and suffering because it is so hard to let go.
I have had others tell me that if one is lucky, that during their lifetime they will have one pet that stands out above all others. Albeit, perhaps an unfair statement because all animals have something to offer if we let go of what we wish and accept what we have.
