lost tools

Before moving out to my land, I had limited space for everything in my garage. One tool that I was always tripping over was my engine hoist. It's big, bulky and weighs a coulple hundred pounds.

Most of my friends knew I had it and that I was eager to loan it out. The only catch was that if you borrowed it, you had to keep it for a minimum of six months.

You'd be suprised how many guys wanted to return it earlier. hahahhaha

I bought my wife a toolkit in a plastic case. I am bad about keeping a clean toolbox; I have lots of tools, but some are scattered through the top mid and bottom boxes, or worse, mixed in the metric box... Then she gets peeved trying to find something out there, but returns it to the kitchen junk drawer instead of the garage. She figures that's fine; easier to find there than on my mess of a bench :D

So, she has this nice little tool kit in her office. It is hers. I will grab something from it instead of going out in the rain to get to the garage, but always return it to its spot in the case, and the case to its spot in the office.

For the kid, I have him a use Kennedy box, and have been placing garage sale tools, and some spares in it. If he wants to work on his bike, or out in his fort, he can take his own tools.

Me, I was good with my Dad's tools. He had a well outfitted set of boxes, and some antiques. Everything had its spot. A lot of the tools came from when him and my Grandfather ran race cars in the 50's. They had history, were well used, but well taken care of.

For years my dad has been complaining about all the tools he has lost over the years. I just thought it was his age and misplacing:rolleyes: Funny how some of them are showing up on my bench :eek:

My dad had the same problem with my brother that your dad's having with you.
My brother would take dads tools over the bank down into the hollow and just leave them there.
Had to laugh at your post.
It brought back memories ~ !

My brother can't say the same thing about dads tools.

Firewalker,
At the end of your post you could have said "Over the years I have missed my ex - wife, I gotta get more practice at the range".

I loaned my pole saw to some friends, and quite a bit later when I needed it I couldn't remember who I loaned it to, so I finally decided to just go buy another. I hired a friend's teenage son one Sat to help me do some work and on the way to my property I told him we were gonna stop at HD so I could buy a pole saw when he spoke up and said "We have one of those", and guess who's saw they had?
Yep, at least I got it back undamaged..................in fact, I've had their Poulan chainsaw for over 4 years now. I keep offering to bring it back but he says he doesn't need it and also this way he knows where it is and that it'll always be ready to use, where if he had it the gas would get old and the chain dull and it would probably never even run!

The one tool I really miss that I loaned out was my OLD TIMER pocket knife. It belonged to a neighbor who gave it to me when I was about 16. I loaned it to a guy when I was in military, I asked for it back 15 min later and he denied having it. I almost punched him in the mouth... Never got it back either.
:( I'm more for misplacing tools. I think I posted about my missing poulan chainsaw. bright green. I have 2, a 14" and a 18" I was sawing up some slash that the power company cut down, stacked the stuff up and put saw behind it so I could pull out brush with tractor. left the dang saw there. went back 3 times looking for it high weeds wasn't there. someone stoled it I though. on 4th trip back I was checking & actually hit the saw with the machete I was swinging. after walking past it 3 times and I know tripped over it once and my brother went through with stick probing too... lol that thing sat there all spring summer and half the fall. it took 4 pulls and fired up with the OLD gas and all hahaha only one ding and faded good, ding from the hacking it took and sun faded it... the saw sat there behind the wood pile all that time as the weeds grew over it... had about a table spoon of water in the oil and some rust too... I put a new clutch/sprocket on there but still same plug from factory in it.. :)

My biggest problem with "lost" tools is that they are always somewhere else when I need them. Either at the new house and garage, the old house and garage, in the barn or machine shed.

If your passport is blue and says United States of America, you won the gene pool.

Lost tools ... not exactly ... I own property in 4 different places ... the tool I need at the time is always someplace else. and it's an easy way to misplace tools forever -- it's missing - must be at the other place .... or maybe not.... I've ended up with a lot of duplicates as well because of needing the same stuff at separate places. In 3 years though it's all coming home to one place and in one barn.
