Today it's 19 degrees with 35 MPH winds. The snow is drifting to about 2'. I love it!!

You guys with cabs don't know what you are missing. In a world of heated and air-conditioned everything, it just feels good to bundle up and do a little battle with the elements. The sting of the wind driven snow on your face makes you feel alive! And a hot cup of coffee afterwords never tasted so good.

Had the exact same thought.

But some guys just can't get enough snow on their face: these you will always find climbing the Everest, reaching the South Pole on foot and driving open station tractors to clear snow. Bring it on! :D

PS Killer B, that has to be the cleanest tractor I have ever seen in wintertime! I wouldn't dare show you guys what mine looks like now

The difference between my face in the cab and yours on an open station, when the wind is nasty, biting and the temps are really cold your face has a grimace and mine has a smile. Don't tell me it isn't so........................cause I been there. I don't have to be half froze to death to appreciate a good cup of coffee.

Of course all those guys in the Polar Bear Club feel the same way as you, so what do I know!
Sincerely, Dirt

So if you didn't bundle up to give the elements better odds you would enjoy this even more????

I may be a weenie but I'm a warm & dry weenie.

Stay warm my friend & don't let too many people know that shifting snow around is fun, they're supposed to think that we're working. ;-)

Nice setup. With that equipment you make any bobcat look inadequate. I like the blade attached to the loaders arms? Do the hydraulics change the angle on the blade?

I don't know about the other guys. I have an open station and get minimal snow in my face. You have to change the chute a little more often but it is usually good.

I'm pretty jealous about the temperature. I was out yesterday doing our road at -20 and wind chill likely in the -40's. It wasn't that bad if dressed well. Had the hotsy (little chemical packets that are quite warm) - kept my feet and hands warm.

Ahh, the joys of the open station tractor.

I spent years on open station tractors moving snow. I remember the insulated overalls, ski hood, goggles, Mickey Mouse Boots, etc, etc. The snow blowing in your face. The goggles fogging. The sleet. One morning I remember being out on the JD 1070 when it was -22 degrees, listening to NPR covering the Mars Rover Mission and mentioning the temp on Mars was -14.

Now I sit in the 3520's cab with the heat cranked in a long sleeve T shirt with the arm rests down, and a cup of Paul De Lima coffee in the cup holder. Yesterday when it was 4 degrees out, I had to turn the heat down. It was getting uncomfortably warm. It's days like that, when I'm in the quiet solitude of the cab, in the comfy chair, with the wipers going that I look back on those yesterdays of past years and think...

****, this Rocks!

I'll bet!!! but with a cab you could have a warm thermos right in there, that must be sweet.
yesterday I had near frozen thighs after having wet snow soaked my pants in low 20's temps:(

What implement are using more the plow or blower?

Have ya ever had the luxury of being in a cab tractor when its below 0 out and its snowing with the wind blowing and all you have to do is turn the window wipers on, turn the radio up, turn the heat down cause you are sweating, and sipping your coffee while your playing in the snow. Thats right playing in the snow, without a cab it is to much like work. :D:D

Enjoy your open station tractor and I will enjoy my cab tractor:p:p

No I really am joking. I spent the last 20 years on my old 8n ford with backblade buddled up and coming in after plowing looking like a snowman taking have the day to warm back up.

Have fun!!!!

Yes, but in case you can't have a good cup waiting for you, even a crap cup tastes good after and hour in the open!!!

Just a couple of weeks ago I had my very first experience in -20degC without a cab. A JD with a cab is now on the wish list, low on the list, but it's there.

This is like the PC vs. Mac thread!!! Are open tractors more prone to viruses or spyware?? Are cab tractors easier to use, yet more expensive??

Be careful, someone will soon label you an 'open/closed tractor zealot'!!!!

Yup. It has it's charms. When I get old and decrepit, I may go back to that. For now, gimme a good three day blizzard, a set of worn out Carharts, and ice crystals on my whiskers. That's livin'.

Hard to say. When it's like this, I usually make one pass on the upwind side of the drive and angle plow to the middle. Then back up using the blower to clear the other half. Minimal snow banks that way.

Hmmm, lets see. 30+ MPH winds, -20 with wind chill, and visibility is maybe 200 ft. right now. I sold my plow truck 2 years ago for way more than I paid for it, and the guy didn't want the plow or tool box on it, I had to sell it! I'm trying to talk my son into getting on the IH 966 with FEL (no cab) to move some snow so we can get off the farm someday soon.

I sure miss that plow truck.

I think I'll run down back of the house, chop a hole in the pond ice and jump in. Just to bring me back to reality.

Will all you Cab Weenies give it a rest please before I get a bad case of Trade Up Itis.

When my 3320 was ordered I had to make a choice between Cab or Back Hoe, since the two were not compatilbe as they are now.

Now Hinton is cold and lots of snow - must respect your thoughts.

What happened to our love of adventure. I agree a cab is GREAT but its not that bad to bundle up; once the initial hit of cold you seem to get used to it; except for that wind its always hard to stop.

It sort of like the comparison to 2WD vs 4WD. There are some who really need 4WD but not sure for myself - prairies are pretty flat. I can likely get by with chains. If I can get a 4WD without really paying for if then I'll have one, otherwise?

The biggest problem I see with Cabs is they only put them on the higher HP tractors. In our area I see a cost of $30K plus whereas I can get a 30 HP tractor in the high teens or low $20's. If I farmed then it would be a no brainer.

I guess the day I can grow whiskers(a full beard, not just a go-tee), I will give up my cab..... :D

Hello Killer_B-

I purchased JD 2520 in SEPT 08. I have 6 acres and a large concrete driveway. I purchased a 5' rear blade (still waiting for skid shoes to be delivered) and to be honest, it's just not working that well to clear the drive of snow. Can you please give me the details on your front blade? What brand, how does it angle and an approximate cost of the same? Also, please let me know how you feel the front blade works as I need to find a better solution to my problem. Thanks,
