On a car, could it be that a cellphone, IPOD, or GPS causes that type of RFI?
Might even be overhead hydro power lines or a hospital Xray machine.

In my opinion cars are getting much too high tech and down the road we might just find that even a pacemaker might cause a brand X car to run amock if a passenger uses a cellphone within 2 ft of the pacemaker due to RFI.

Scary stuff!

scary to think of all the different possibilities,
what if the cell phone/gps/power lines start to interfere
with the pacemakers!

interesting concepts...

It all goes to show how brainless some people can be... the car is gaining speed, the driver gets on the cell phone to 911 in place of shifting to neutral and applying the brakes. I can't believe how dumb this is. How is a dispatcher going to help in this situation if you can't think for yourself. By the time they give you instructions your crashed.
I don't care what anyone thinks... there is a computer involved with this action. My camry floor mats are practically bolted to the floor with hooks and can't get near the accelerator.
Too darn many computers gathering way too much information. My carburatorated vettes and GTOs are very simple to work on, fun to drive and don't run away unless your right foot tells them to. They also don't need a " check engine lite " to remove a hundred dollar bill from your wallet if they decide to miss one of their electronic functions.
Gas, Tires, and Oil were the only items on my check list !

I too love the old cars -- but still having SWIMBO around and me having all my body parts still attached because of airbags in a 2008 Toyota kinda changed my mind as to when and where I might drive them. While I might be frustrated at all the attempts to make vehicles idiot proof, I take a deep breath and remember there are now a lot more idiots on the road:rolleyes:

I agree 100%. if you have time to call 911 you have time to hit the brakes and shift into neutral or a lower gear.

Have you ever had a throttle cable stick? Or the butterfly valve get a little bit of gunk built up around it causing it to stick open? It happens.

The "sticky throttle" problem is said to occur when the engine is hot, and the idle speed fails to return to it's 850rpm idle speed - staying in the 1500-2000rpm range.

Full roller bearing supported throttle shaft prevents sticking (GMMotorsport.com)

The accelerator pedal is an electronic drive by wire control which prevents having to lube the throttle cable to prevent sticking. :D

Edit:
One more: The throttle had been a bit sticky for the last 2 days and had to be tapped hard to knock it back to idle which made the traffic jam a bit more interesting.

I have been in a few cars that did the uncontrolled acceleration trick. I m glad I had enought sense to to deal with it. one time a friend had an XJ12 Jaguar convertible he bought at a salvage sale. Being young and dumb we took it out to a stretch on the 4 lane and latched it back to see the top speed. It went to 130 with no problem till I told my friend to slow down. When he didnt look good. I asked what was wrong and he said the throttle was stuck. When we pulled it up the socket joint that holds the linkage in the firewall popped out. I reached up and turned the switch off. we coasted to a stop. When we checked it out a hose on top of the motor had gotten under on of the linkages for the optional right hand drive setup. I think alot o f this stuff was over hyped.
I think that it could be radio related, We had a remote contolled mobile rock crusher working on a a job. My excavator had the remote to make it travel and stop the conveyors. One of my friends said i kept momentarily engageind th e out feed conveyor and spilling aggregate on the ground. i denied it and we had a meeting outside on the ground about that time a loader with a company radio in it and when he talked that machine would engage to conveyors.

I then got on the brakes BIG TIME but the engine provided more than the brakes could dissipate and I continued to accelerate.

I don't see how that is possible, and it is unlikely that 2 unrelated things
would go wrong at the same time (throttle and brakes). I suppose an
engine fire could damage both at the same time.

I am sure that slowing down a vehicle under accelleration and at-speed
would not be the same as with the engine not accellerating. But
remember that there are plenty of 500+hp cars with ATs that go to the
drags and the drivers hold the cars back at full throttle with left foot braking.

Anyway, I am not trying to make light of what I am sure was a very
harrowing experience, Patrick.

If he had vacuum assisted brakes and pumped them overmuch it could have depleted the vacuum assist, which would reduce the effect of his braking.

The Dodge dealership pooh poohed my claim and refused to search for a cause as a warranty job.
Go to ODI - Office of Defects Investigation and look up recall # 02V161000
Summary:
ON CERTAIN PICKUP TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH DIESEL ENGINES ONLY, THE THROTTLE LINKAGE JOINTS CAN CORRODE AND CAUSE THE THROTTLE TO BIND OR STICK.
Consequence:
THIS COULD POTENTIALLY RESULT IN A LOSS OF THROTTLE CONTROL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Have you checked on this? It sounds like it could have been the cause of your runaway truck.

I switched the key off and carefully with no power steering and reduced power brakes changed lanes and took an off ramp.

Were U ever lucky!

Many cars will lock up the steering if you turn off the key (anti theft U know)

Still thing a KISS (temporary solution) for Toyota owners would be to tie a string to the accelerator peddle that you could yank on to retrieve the peddle.

Well, I haven't tried every car out there to check it out, but on my chevy truck, I can shut the engine off and not lock the wheel. I have to remove the key before the wheel will lock.

There are a couple of qustions I'd like to know the answer to

first is it possible for a Lexus at wide open throttle already going 100 plus to over power or overheat the breaks ultimately initially slowing the car but the heat becoming too much for the breaks and the wide open throttle resulting in ultimately a run away

second can the car have the keyless ignition and if so how precisely donyou shut the car off at a IDE open throttle situation?

Finally is it possible that the car does not permit shifting under certain situation?

I would really like to see test of the officer's rental car under the situation he described immediatly before he killed himself, wife, wife, daughter and friend

being a rrental and therefore not intimate with vehicle must have contributed

Not making excuses for Toyota, but these people need to spend some time riding rat-trap dirtbikes with a throttle cable prone to sticking wfo, a lifted s-10 blazer that loved to blow front brake lines only at red lights and International trucks that blew throttle return springs at the worst time. Learn to giggle, leave skidmarks in the Fruit of the Looms, and just take it out of gear.

I think this is nothing more than a ruse by the State Run Media to get the sheeples attention away from the true insidiousness that's going on in DC.
