Is low sulpher diesel going to be a problem for the Y385 engine in my IHT 284. I remember a thread some where on this issue. I don't remember the answer.
My engine was built May 2005 and has an EPA plate attached.
My tractor has 21hrs and has not worked too hard most of those hours.
I use a sulpher additive for the fuel in my 48 Cub since unleaded gasoline. Does the same apply to diesel fuel with low sulper??
Hope this is not an already explained question.

The answer is no.

The new ULSD (s15) fuel should start showing up at retailers anytime now if it already hasn't. Finding anything other than ULSD either on-road or dyed off-road after September 1 will be difficult as only small refiners will be producing LSD (s500) fuel.

ULSD fuel has been discussed at length in the Fuel and Lubrication forum. Here is just one post that describes what is happening and it has pointers to other sites that can answer all your questions.

BTW, if you live in California ULSD will be your ONLY choice for fuel after September 1. No exceptions there.

I only use the off-highway #2 diesel fuel in my tractor and excavator. I purchased a old JCB excavator and started using the low sulfur fuel in it. After about 20 hours of use, it started leaking diesel fuel into the engine crankcase. I began researching this problem on the internet and found a lot of articles that seem to indicate that if a vehicle has been using high sulfur fuel and then you switch to low sulfur, it may damage the seal in the injector pumps. This was apparently a problem with some of the volkswagen diesel cars when people started using the low sulfur fuel in them. It may be that injector pump seals in the newer vehicles are better now and it may not be a problem. I just use my equipment on the farm and the high sulfur fuel is cheaper.

I think there could be problems for some people. Some Jinma owners use #2 heating oil as fuel. The new ultra low sulphur fuels will have an added lubrication package to compensate for the lost lubrication properties of the sulphur. This will add a few cents of cost per gallon.

In the case of home heating oil, I'd be willing to bet that the lubrication package will not be added. Tractor owners using #2 oil could be putting their engines at risk of excessive wear and or damage.

LOL :D

The problem was NOT with year 2006 ultra low sulfur fuel (ULSD 15ppm sulfur), it was with year 1993 low sulfur diesel (LSD 500ppm sulfur).

The problem was first seen in 1993 when all of North America switched over to the low sulfur diesel #2 that everyone has been using for the last 15 years or so. It only occured in a couple of cases where rotary injector pumps did not use nitrile pump seals and they shrunk and leaked. However, that was then and there has not been any problems anywhere due to this since all the fuel injection equipment manufacturers changed their seal unit to nitrile composition, which also works just fine with the new ULSD.....
