The local Tractor Supply gives 10% on your say so, or at least I've never been ask for any kind of proof. Home Depot does as well as long as you file the paperwork, Lowes here is so much more expensive than HD that I seldom go there any more. It's funny that one restaurant locally is owned by a Syrian man, he gives all military vets a free dinner on Veteran's Day. No strings attached, don't have to buy a second meal or anything. He told me that America is God's homeland and the military is God's tool to keep it free.

A guy from Yemen opened up a smoke shop in Raleigh in the last year or so. He was supposed to have been a very nice guy who helped people out. If you were short of money, and a regular customer, he would basically extend you credit. Thugs robbed the place and killed the man for no danged reason. It took months but four men were arrested recently in the man's murder.

The guy had the American Dream and four thugs, who started with more in life because they were born in the US, killed the guy and his dream. They got away with next to nothing. Completely senseless.

Later,
Dan

If I'm good at nothing else, it's losing paperwork. Can't remember stuff like that at all. I know I have several copies of my DD214 in a nice safe place. Would my VA card work as well, or do these places demand the DD214?

I hate it when misinformation is promoted to the point that it hurts companies trying to do a good deed for folks. Here is Lowe's policy on the 10% military discount. Current and retired military, including immediate family, and veterans with VA ID cards are always extended the 10% discount. Only on Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Veterans Day does Lowe's extend the discount to all active and veteran members of the armed forces if a DD214 is presented. My retired ID card has ALWAYS been honored. Here's the complete text of this program from the Lowe's website.

Lowe's established the 10% Military Discount to support the men and women who are currently serving our country in the Armed Services1 and to honor Retired Veterans and VA Recipients.2 This 10% discount is also extended to the immediate family3 of those who are currently serving, Retired Veterans, or VA Recipients.
To qualify for the Everyday 10% Military Discount, you must:
Be currently serving in, or retired from, a qualifying branch of the Armed Services, or be the immediate family member of someone who is and have a valid military ID Card.
Or:
Be a veteran who receives VA benefits and have a valid Veteran Identification Card (VIC).

We honor all Veterans on three specific holidays: Memorial Day, 4th of July and Veterans Day. During these three holiday weekends, we extend the discount to all veterans who served honorably and who present a valid Form DD214 or other proof of service. The Lowe痴 Military Discount is extended to the Veteran community on these three holidays only.
The Military Discount must be used on personal purchases only and cannot be used for Lowes.com purchases, previous sales, or the purchase of gift cards or services including product installations. It cannot be combined with the Lowe痴 Price Guarantee, or promotions such as "Spend and Get," "New Mover," "Project Starter," "Your Choice," or discounts such as Quote Support Program (QSP) quotes.
1 Armed Services US Army, US Navy, US Air Force, US Marine Corps, US Coast Guard, or the National Guard and who are in active, reserve, or retired status.
2 Retired Veterans and VA Recipients Veterans who have retired after 20 years of service and/or those who receive VA Benefits
3 Immediate Family Spouses and/or dependent children (up to 18 years old.)

I think all these discounts are why Lowes is more expensive than Home Depot on their published prices. I want a ladder - Lowes everyday price $214, HD $198. So a 10% discount at lowes equals going price at HD.

But if I order online w/ my Navy Federal CC I get 4% back from either.

I agree ive found that myself. I will shop online to compare both prices. In fact last week I bought a ladder.and it was just as you said. and the same stock number.(werner). I guess I could ahve played the game and gone to Lowes and ask to have the price matched. But its easier to deal with Home Depot.
I assume the number of customers they loose because we shop and choose is slim enough thta the profit lost is made up with the higher price.
as far as lumber they are pretty darn close on the prices..
Just to add around here the plumbing stuff is sometimes priced higher than the local hardare stuff.Even the well bladder tank was less, hot water heater the same:thumbsup:
Oh when I was in Lowes waiting for my ''quick pickup'' I was over an hour as they tried to find my order, well the guy next t me cashed out and turned and said they had forgot the contractor discount. So the clerk refigured it and he left with a smile.I didnt realize they gave a contractor discount.

Devoid of emotion; discounts, their percent, eligible recipients, and any other consideration are solely at the discretion of the store (or its corporate decisions.)

Everyone wants free money and if habituated to it think they are losing an entitlement if policy changes.

Get over it. Stores, by law, owe absolutely nothing to any person or group of persons whether or not they got shot at and missed or were wounded or served for 20-30 years or whatever.

I feel it is a nice gesture (and savvy PR) that a store will offer a discount to military personnel, retirees or whatever. I'm a Viet Nam era vet. I have the medal/ribbon to show for it. I have a DD-214 attesting to my honorable service and discharge. All that and a buck will get you a coke out of a vending machine at Lowes.

I won't be picketing Lowes or Home Depot or... because of not getting a military discount. I didn't join up to get a discount at big box stores.

It is SO VERY UNSEEMLY to pontificate on one's personal deservedness as compared to someone who could and did serve their country but didn't make a career of it. Those of us who choose to depart the womb to tomb security of the "lifer" and get a job and to pay taxes to ensure the servicemen's paycheck don't need the abuse, thank you very much.

We are all cogs in the big wheel. All who volunteered for service in the Viet Nam or other conflict took their chances. To quarrel over one's position in the handout line is not manly. I will never disrespect someone for not getting wounded or for their being a lifer. All who served voluntarily (and most draftees) deserve gratitude for their service to our nation.

If a business chooses to honor some of those who gave more then so be it. No tears here. I also don't whine about being in a tier /pool of folks likely to NEVER get any VA medical benefits. I'm glad for those who do.

Come on guys... stores don't owe anyone anything regardless of their military service. It is really great that they offer anything to any of us ex or current military folks.

Go ahead and flame me if you want, I have Nomex long handles.:laughing:

Then how about a merchant's discount?

To tell the truth, I shop mostly at a local small local hardware business. I go to HD for a few items, and I hear a Lowes is coming (big deal). I also go to a small bookstore and never the chains for books. I do get a senior discount at two thrift stores.
