lowe's wrong chain saw in box

I have to say that I'd never buy a box store chainsaw in the first place, I only buy Stihl and only from a the local Stihl dealer.
15 years ago I went to my local stihl dealer to buy a chainsaw. I looked at the models online and knew what I wanted. He had it in stock but wanted to charge me $50 over list. When I pointed that out I was told very forcefully that, "this is MY price". I left and have never went back. The next Stihl dealer is almost an hour away so I ended up disappointed with a Husqvarna. I should've drove the hour.

Like others have suggested, I would go back to Lowe's and talk to the manager. If that doesn't work and you purchased the saw with a credit card, file a dispute with your credit card company. That usually works.

Effectivley, some bad customer do that sometimes.
They buy a new product, then, return it a couple of days later, saying that it does not work ok , and return it! BUT, they put inside the box, a used product. SO, the store has to be careful to open the box, in thoses situations , to check it ok. In this case, Lowe has sold the product to a new customer and, here, rocco611 has been had with it. SORY FOR YOU, GUY. Every body, BEWARE!

I had reverse - an Amazon Marketplace seller sold me a knock-off product that didn't work. I returned it only for them to claim it wasn't what they sold me. However, I noted that I wasn't the first to be sold fake items by this company and Amazon arranged the refund.

Which reminds me, I need to leave a one-star review.

I thought I purchased a Craftman s205 chainsaw , but when I got home there was a troy built chainsaw in the box. also it had a damaged primer bulb. I took the troybuilt saw back to lowe's in the craftsman box I recieved it in along with the receipt. The manager looked up the troybuilt model # said the troybuilt saw was a home depot exclusive , and that no way did that saw come in that box from this store. I asked them to check another box. they brought one to the counter. unsnapped the case looked inside the closed the case quickly then told me they would not take back the saw. they didnt let me look inside the case. also the they said the saw I had fuel and oil residue in it, they said they cannot take back power equipment with fuel or oil residue . do new saws get tested before shipping? if so a saw new in the box that had been tested would not be returnable ? Anyway that was my only bad experience with lowes. not sure I will shop there again though
I had a terrible experience with lowes but not on power tools. I go there for very minor things, my only other option is to drive 40 miles to Home Depot. lowes stinks all the way up to their corporate office customer service. Once they get your money, you are a nobody.

I've never had any trouble with returns at Lowe's, even without a receipt. But then again I've never had the wrong item in a box either. I can't believe they gave you such a hard time. Try taking it to another Lowe's store, or as many as you need to until you get satisfaction. I would complain to as many people as I could. That is not right, and they should make it right.

This is just one of many reasons that I stop buying from Lowes years ago... Can't stand them
I have had good results with my Lowes purchases. The latest one was a clothes washer. My 30 year old Sears Kenmore finally gave up.

If you have purchased a new washer in the last 5 to 8 years, you know how hard it is to get a washer that cleans clothes. I looked at several different stores for a washer and compared price. I decided to go with a washer from Lowes. The price was good and free delivery and they took my old Sears away for free.

I had the new washer for about a week, washed some clothes in it and decided that this was not going to work. The worst part was that there was no final rinse with water. I didn't see how just spinning the clothes would get the soap out.

So went over to the store, looked closer at the washers that they had and found one that had a final rinse option. Told the clerk that I wanted this other washer. No problem, they gave me full credit for the first purchase, and again, brought out the newer washer and took the not so new washer back. I am happy with the new washer as Lowes customer service.

Stihl is the only brand of chainsaw I use, and I deal with Rural King, which is only 20 minutes away. Guess I'm lucky.
A tree guy I use occasionally only uses Husqvarna, so they can't be that bad.

My best guess is that the store had no idea that a customer had scammed them, the box appeared new and neither you or the store personnel who put it back on the shelf had reason to look further. Big Box stores are notorious for this kind of fraudulent activity. I'm really sorry this happened to you but unfortunately the store has no way to prove when the proper contents were removed. I am always careful buying anything in packaging.

I bought a husqvarna trimmer at lowes a few years ago that was new and defective. It would not start. I took it back and they would not believe me that it was defective. I spent about an hour talking to return desk, manager, and had to wait while the garden people tried to prove me wrong before they would replace it. I no longer buy any gas powered equipment from box stores. Repair shops won’t work on stuff from big box stores under warranty. Spend the little extra and buy somewhere that will service it.

This is fair warning for someone with 28 year old appliances, which may need replacement. My understanding is that home appliances last about 7 years these days, which blows my mind. I am really not looking forward to replacing any of my appliances, whether the new one works well or not out of the box, and entering the throw-it-away and don't repair mode.

Most if not all stores will not take gas tools back if they have oil or gas. A junk yard here will not take and engine block unless gas and oil are vamoosed. Oil pan musr be removed.
Years ago had a friend buy a Poulan in a box, took it home, put chain on. Backwards! Called my wanting to know why it wouldn't cut vary well.

Rocco611,
You didn't by any chance put it on a credit card, did you? That could give you some footing when talking to the manager.

I believe MTD builds both saws, so it could be that it was placed in the wrong box after assembly. This would explain why the return desk clerk turned pale when he/she looked inside the other box - possibly quite a few were put in the wrong box and shipped.

I was at an auction recently that was selling Home Depot returns. Someone had bought a toilet, installed it, put their old toilet in the box, and returned it. Wasn't the same model or even brand. Really? You're going to put a used toilet in the box and return it as new.

Some people are just scum...

If that's the case, why be so dishonest? Why not simply rectify the problem with the customer?

While I did say previously I have had good luck at Lowe's, and I shop there frequently. I like the fact that with a business account you get 5% off on your purchases. But I also understand, you are basically on your own when you shop at a big box store. You're better off never asking for help, and simply going about your business. Forget trying to call the store on the telephone, that's a complete no-go. The Lowe's app is also extremely useful. I can use usually look a price up faster on the app than the cashier can from their computer. It will also tell you where things are in the store, if you happen to be at a location you aren't familiar with.

Reminds me of a Costco return- large stainless grill, dirty and still smelling of BBQ. The guys was proud to be able to return it. I asked one of the employees and they said it was far easier (and safer) just to take it back. People now believe if they make a big enough issue they will get whatever they want. Good lord .....

I agree 100%, if you cut many trees or use a woodstove for your main heat source in winter like I do you need a quality saw. There could be exceptions but a big box store just won't cut it (pun intended)

Go back to the saws and open the boxes yourself. And next time, buy a Stihl

Yep, I'll second that. We heat with wood as well. I have three Stihl chainsaws, a great big heavy professional model, a small lightweight homeowner model, and a medium duty model. My go-to for everyday felling of medium sized trees, and limbing, is usually the medium duty, since it is light enough to not kill me, lol. I'm no spring chicken. But the big boy comes out for the felling and rounding up of large logs.
