Could you give me an idea how much it cost to hire someone else to do it? I know we are in different areas, and there are many variables, but curious. I haven't checked locally. I have quite a few acres I want to improve and have plenty of time to do it (not plenty of free time to work on it, but no rush to get it all finished). I'm thinking if I could land a half-dozen or so jobs per year for other folks like yourself - once I get "good" at it - it would easily cover much of the initial cost. My oldest son is also interest in learning and we are exlploring many home based business opportunities. A few landscaping jobs would fit right into our plans. But, as with many things, it may all just be a dream that needs to be reigned in! Thanks again for all your info!

They do take a beating. The nubs get some hard hits on large rocks or outcroppings and the gasgets along the sides get damaged easily if rope or wire ( especially barbed wire) get wound into the end sockets. They require a fair bit of maintenance from what I've seen.....but nothing compares for a finished product. The quality of the finished soils for seed will just blow you away.

I've got a place about 45 minutes away I can rent one from. I think it's definitley worth the $180 per day to rent. You can get a lot of land raked in a full day! It really depends on your situation and how much detail work there is to do and how many SQF you're talking about. A small area probably does favor a hire out.

It's been a couple summers ago, but if I remember right the rental on a 6' harley rake was $100 a day. The guy did my yard which is about 10,000 sq/ft for $400 - they charged me $125 an hour for crew and machine. And that included them raking out the areas they couldn't get to and removing the rocks. When they left it was ready for me to seed.

Anybody have thoughts on HP vs size of rake? I took a look on the Harley site, and it looks like the small T5 would do well with a 25 HP, and the T6 might be OK.

Just interested in any experience with these things...

Robb,
I've been on the less well represented side of this question before, but I believe, in general, manufacturers are quite conservative in their recommendations re: size of tractor recommended for a particular unit they are selling.

A Harley rake doesn't take too deep a cut, ie. it doesn't take gobs of hp to run one. My tractor has 19PTO hp and I'm satisfied with the way it runs a 6' Harley Rake. Your tractor should have no problem with a 6 footer.

I am not suggesting you ignore the manufacturer's recommendation, but am relaying an observation from my (limited) personal experience.

I appreciate all the information. I really WANT a power rake, but even for the large area I have, I'd rather spend the $$ on a larger tractor that I won't be as likely to outgrow and either rent a power rake in the future, or hire the job out for those that know what they are doing to get it done quickly.
Thanks again for the discussion.
