Should be able to get for about $17,500-18k.

I'm seeing $17,200 with 'make offer' so I have no idea what the bottom line might be.

But I didn't pay a whole lot more than that for my house on 3 acres and it's more than I've paid for my last three cars combined, so ....

Times have changed. I’m guessing either you bought used cars or your still driving something from the late 80’s. Nissan a few years ago had the cheapest new car price in the US market. They cost $10,000. But no one would buy them, because they had no AC and were stick shifts. Cars lose value quickly and are not good investments if you buy new.

The cars I've bought new and kept 9 years have cost me about 200$ per month in depreciation over the 9 years. The car I bought 3 years old and drove for 6 cost me 200$ per month in depreciation but I didn't get the three best years and there were more repairs. My cars have fewer repairs when it is me taking care of how they are used and maintained for their entire life. YMMV

I bought my tractor new. I didn't want headaches. My buddy said that he would have sold me his old Kubota cheap. I asked him if he meant the Kubota that his wife made him replace because he spent more time working on it than with it. Again, YMMV

There is some value in knowing the history of something. At the same time everyone has to weigh their own situation. I have both sitting in the driveway. My Jeep was purchased new and I have driven every mile that it has seen. It has only ever given 1 problem in nearly 100,000 miles. I have taken care of it and it has taken care of me. My pickup was bought used 17 years ago and has never had a major repair. It was money very well spent. There are used tractors out there that would serve a new owner well. There are also some that were traded for a reason, are obsolete or are simply used up. You really have to look carefully and in some areas there isn't a good selection available.

We have two tractors. The Ford was bought new by my father in-law and it is still running strong. The Massey Ferguson was bought new by my father in 1981 and it just had its first failure (hydraulic issues). Both have been worked hard, but well maintained. With the move a few months ago to a new place I'm finding that I really need a 4WD of some sort and I'm still trying to decide whether that will be a larger used tractor or a smaller new tractor. I could make either one work.
