Those that run R4s and never get stuck are Blessed with very good working conditions. :)

Richard, you may remember my forum thread on mucking out a pond. I was using my L5740HSTC with Industrial tire and one of my sons used our M8540HDC with Ag tires. Mine did better than expected, but I didn't expect much.

I never got stuck, but learned quickly where I could and couldn't go. If I hadn't seen it, I wouldn't have believed it. He was running through stuff dragging the frame in the mud. A few times he had to dump the mud and push or drug it out with the bucket. I like the Industrial tires on my GL, but that's because if it's muddy I usually park it and we have other tractors with all types even one with turfs.

I'm sure you've never been in the kind of clay we have, but every third or fourth load even the M8540 had to run down the road to clear the lugs.

On ice or packed frozen snow, there really is not much difference between tire types
I had R4's on my old L and have R1's on the current M and both will push the front wheels every which way but straight in the aforementioned conditions. I run full wrap lugged chains on the rear wheels and just yesterday put a set of regular ladder chains on the fronts.
Nothing will stop the old girl now.

Got stuck on flat land with R4 tires. Had to push out with the bucket. 20100206_MD_Blizzard%2020%2B18_6113.jpeg

At the right conditions you tires are like ice skates floating on water above the snow. Snow only respects chains.

I've found the same thing. If the snow has any give to it at all, I can make both my R1 Ags and R4 Industrials dig down in the snow until they've made a snow and ice pit they can't climb out of. But chains will always climb out.

If the snow is packed hard without any give to it then the R4s do better than the R1s because they spread the load to take advantage of what little traction that there is, although in those conditions R1s will work almost as good.

If I can't work without spinning a tire and digging a pit then it's time to lever myself out with the loader or backhoe and put on chains.

My tractor hasn't arrived but my WSM is a big improvement over the WSM for my rtv x1100c, but still way behind manuals for my new Ford GT350 mustang. To me the part most missed is theory of operation description. I still don't really understand the 12 speed tranny and when you must use the clutch.

No manual will explain this as either way works the same. Pushing the foot clutch in is the same as moving the column forward-Reverse to the middle notch. I have a bad leg, so I almost always use the column shifter. My sons grew up using a synchronized shuttle shift and use the foot clutch more often except when using the FEL digging into a pile of dirt, crushed rock etc. then they use the hand clutch.

About the best in theory were the John Deere "Fundamentals of Service" and "Fundamentals of Machine Operation". These "fundamentals books" were general to tractors rather than model specific - but most were nicely done, and lots of technical schools used them as textbooks. You can still pick them up used and inexpensively on Abebooks.com or Ebay.

Yanmar published similarly good WSMs in the 1980s/90s which were model specific. The WSM with the red plastic binder. That might have been just bragging because at that time they held the patents on several key items such as the bevel gear drive that everyone uses today... as well as their version of powershift (shuttleshift) transmisson with automatic clutchpacks that has become common practice today. Anyway, their old WSMs were good with lots of multicolor illustrations showing theory of how the power flows. I'd bet It's basically the same transmission that you have in the M7060. If so, Yanmar's WSM for their YM187/276/ or YM336 would work for you. The YM336 is also a 12 speed with column FNR and foot clutch very similar to yours. Those Yanmar WSM are common on ebay but kind of expensive - I see them in the $100 range.

It's worth noting that the WSM for our Kubota M59 does a good job on the theory and nice illustrations for Kubota's HST plus+ transmission. The M59 doesn't come with a shuttle shift option, but their HST + description is worth the price of the whole WSM. I was disappointed to find that they do poorly on their presentation of the theory and mechanisms of their pollution control devices.

But if you enjoy gear theory, get either a JD shuttleshift transmission FOA textbook (Fundamentals of Operation), or old US Yanmar WSM in the stiff red plastic binder for any of their powershift models.

Roy King: congrat on your new machine! one of the best. imho i'd work with a friend or the dealership in going through the motions of manual gear operation. save the $100 for your 1st fluid change, you'll need it. am sure gear operation will come easily after a while for you. best regards on an awesome tractor

My 7060HSC-12 arrived at the dealer, however the creeper gears, and FEL third port, front grill guard, were not install arrived at the dealer a day later, dealer comment we have no idea why it wasn't installed at factory, two float/detent rear valves were installed, got the radials very happy with them nice fat tall tire with healthy lugs, should shed mud well. Order the T&T from fit-rite a month ago, Monday I'll order the 66" wicked grapple, and toothbar for bucket, front and rear cameras is here along with messicks radio. Should I spend $50 to get the grapple orange? Dealer will water my tires dropped off 4 gallons of antifreeze, told him I want a pressure test front and rear valves, manual says 2750# we'll how close. Getting supplies out to 500 hours and I've already got the WSM For tractor and FEL.
Any suggestions? Now I'll be able to unload the 800# Mep-802a 5kw used mil surplus genset I got two weeks. ago. I believe we are in for many years of bad weather here in Florida, we just had the wettest year since my arrival in 1971, ponds and bogs are filled water tables are up, roads are rutted. I'm not a believer in global warming just long weather cycles, there is evidence on the farms lands around here of water managed going back more than 40 years and talks with old farmers confirm it used to be much wetter.
