Made in the USA

Boeing jets are made in the U.S. Does that mean other countries shouldn't buy them? Protectionism is a dangerous game as one usually finds out we are interconnected.

Boeing 787s are assembled in WA and SC. Boeing has a lot of subs on this plane with the wings being made in Japan. Japan buys a lot of Boeing product; maybe they said they want to buy Japanese and demanded a piece of the action? This is the problem in determining the "rightful" owner of jobs and money.

They're currently only assembled in Everett, WA. The SC plant will open eventually--it's the start of the slippery slope to remove Boeing completely from Seattle.

Boeing used to manufacture aircraft but that's all over now. These days they're in the systems integration business, which means they do design and integration and final assembly. The major assemblies of the 787 are made all over the world, very little being made around here anymore. Lots of local machine shops and fab businesses gone TU because of this movement.

In order to get contracts from, say, JAL for new aircraft, Boeing typically will have to agree to give some business to a japanese mfg. Ditto Italy and practically every other company.

Frankly it's companies like the Lazy B that have been big contributors to the decline of decent American manufacturing jobs. The bid requirements they placed on the 787 for vendors were ridiculous--in some cases they had to guarantee pricing for 10 years at a flat rate. They are known as a company that beats their vendors up pretty bad (like Walmart, Dell, and some other sterling examples of american success :))

The State of Washington didn't help with their tax system not providing breaks for a HUGE employer and their road system so congested it took hours for Boeing to move their parts from one factory or machine shop to another. Seattle opted to put much of their transportation money into light rail instead of widening their main freeway. I-5 still goes to 2 lanes (each way) through Seattle, a major city. I'll bet your city has a wider road.
As to the 10 year contracts, apparently others, like the Japanese and Italians, can sign up for them so why can't local machine shops who, by the way, don't have to contend with a weakening dollar like the foreign subs. Boeing signed up for the foreign parts suppliers since they buy Boeing planes. If Boeing hadn't exercised that strategy all the jobs would have gone to Airbus leaving no work in the US. I don't see that as Boeing contributing to the demise of the US, I see it as Boeing bringing jobs ( you could argue foreign jobs) to the US.

State of WA put $8.5B in improvements to the Everett area so that Boeing would build the 787 there. It contributed about 800 jobs...what's that per job??

the real reason they're moving to SC is no union. They offered a 10 year contract to AIM in exchange for a no-strike guarantee and AIM turned them down. You're dead right about transit in Seattle--it's a complete disaster. but that's not enough to get Boeing to walk away from all the investment they have here. Wages, OTOH, that's another story.
