You are very wrong here..... Look at the people that work the trucks every day and those people drive domestic trucks because they will take the abuse a truck needs to take. They many not be as good if it is a road truck all the time, but if it is a working truck look at what is out there.

Also even if a toyota is made here in the states, where is the engineering and profits and most subcontractors from? What about if it is a chevy assembled in canada?

Last, the reason the assembly and some parts production has left the states is because of the unions lets put the blame where it is due.... THE UNIONS and their greedy leadership and look who we have in the white house, a union Chicago politician....

those people drive domestic trucks because of the coolaid. Like you. I don't see a whole lot of 1/2 commercial trucks. AND, I don't see a lot of 1 ton foreign P/Us.

Every single Union contract MUST be approved and agreed to by the company, on a RECURRING BASIS. Seems to me it's the management's fault.

Which part am I very wrong about... that our Toyota cost less than our Chevy or is built better than our Chevy? Neither one. It did cost less and it is built better. And it was built by American workers, so we know American workers are capable of quality work. It just isn't demanded of them in American owned auto plants. As for who's fault that is... you got that part right. Greedy labor and greedy management.

On a side note, I was in the McDonald's drive through this morning and saw a bumper sticker on the car in front of me that really hit home.

"Bailout Studebaker"

Remember that phrase from a couple years back - 'race to the bottom'. Well, if the rest of the world wants to have a race to edge of a cliff, do you want to race with them? I don't, but that is what we are being forced into.

I don't blame unions, the average worker, etc., the blame goes to politicians and the lobbyists who tell them what to do, and pay well for the privilege.

Follow the money, who pays the lobbyists?

Also, for every big cheese making an extra $5 million per year, that is enough to pay 6,250 40 hour work weeks at $20/hour. Think about the numbers.

Right on.

Yep. The Studebaker National Museum is fairly new and really nice! :)

Official Studebaker National Museum Website

It is on the same campus as The Center For History.

Center for History-part of The Museums at Washington & Chapin

They have the Studebaker National Museum, which is all about Studebaker, of course. The Center For History has a very nice museum about the history of the area. They have a restored worker's house that shows you how the working class lived back a hundred years ago. They have the Oliver Mansion, which is a beautiful stone mansion that was owned by the Oliver family (Oliver plows, farm implements and tractors). The Oliver family left it in the 1970's and left everything in it. Fully furnished. Clothes, furniture, silverware, everything. Great history.

As for Peterson Printing, well that is kind of sad. They sold out to a company called Gallery Graphics. Then there were allegations of embezzlement at the new company, lawsuits, prison, etc... not sure of the outcome, but Peterson Printing is no more.

South Bend is also home to Notre Dame and The National College Football Hall of Fame. If you are ever in town, it is worth a stop for a walk on ND campus, a tour of the hall of fame, a visit to the Studebaker Museum and a tour through the Oliver mansion. :)

Imagine my surprise, that management would capitulate to union extortion of sign or we strike. Shocking, just shocking.

Aye carumba. Lots of strong opinions here.

If I can, I try to buy goods that are made

1. Close to where I live.
2. Made in Canada or the US.

If I can't find 1 or 2, I'll buy whatever. It's hard though because not much is made close to home and even goods from Canada or the United States are often very hard to find.

No matter what, I'd rather my $ go to support a neighbour or freindly patriot.

Doesn't work quite like that. Contract expires, there is no strike, noone has a job. Hire new workers it's pretty simple really. Or hire the 20 year veteran back for minimum wage. Unions don't have near the power people think they do. Everyone seems to forget the cases in which unions gave salary cut concessions and executives took bonuses. We actually had a senatorial candidate here that used a situation like that as a bragging right to how he was good at cutting expenses in business and would cut expenses in washington. Sorta backfired on him as that corporation had offices in town.

There is a difference between Mafia backed unions and normal unions.

Really? A bunch of people banded together that tell you you cannot work somewhere unless you pay them dues... or a bunch of people banded together that tell you you cannot work somewhere unless you pay them protection money. Either way it kinda sounds like extortion to me.

Everything in America is for sale. I don't see made in USA lasting much longer. Who would care these days?

I bought a pair of Red Wing boots. I was told they are made in USA. The guy said they were but is it all made here? Who knows. 164 dollars later. I bought a woodburner for 5000 dollars that is made in Poland. It's a real good one and the USA made one is 6500 dollars. I wasn't going to pay 1500 dollars more for a product that isn't any better. A few hundred would be ok but come on, it came all the way from Poland and is just as good and cheaper.
