Tractor
Mahindra 4510
Tractor works fine if raditor is clean (coolant, fan belt, thermostat, etc. all good) - but the radiator quickly clogs with chaff & dust when used to bush-hog (...as if why would anyone buy a tractor to do that?). Problem is probably not unique to 4510. Has anyone found a good solution? Reverse fan to push air from engine to front instead of from front to engine? Build a housing in front of radiator to pull air from top instead of from chaffy ground? Add an electric fan in front to increase airflow? Has anyone relocated the air filter on this model (this could allow more room in front of radiator for air flow)?

I have the same model with the same problem but then I have a Yanmar with the same illness. I just try to clean up the debris whenever I see the temperature wanting to rise.
I have even lifted the hood partially but that did not help either. I washed out the radiator fins with water but that is only a temporay solution until more stuff blows in. I used Water Wetter and that may have helped a tiny bit.
I even now limit my mowing to 45 minutes on a hot day or it wants to get warm. If you find the answer let me know also.
I had asked this same question on this site about a year ago but no one had the real solution.

My 4110 suffers the same problem. I would love to know about a good 'fix'.

I've thought about finer screen over the course pre-screens. That would at least be easier to clean rather than after the radiator is plugged up.

Doesn't really matter where you draw the air from, it's still going to have all the chaff in it when dry. Water doesn't get the stuff out unless you use a pressure washer and then you'd better be careful about fin damage. Washing with the filter screens in place is almost useless as they diffuse the water flow before it hits the rad. My 4110 has had the problem since new and the only thing that gets me by is stopping when the temp gets above 3/4 on the gauge and blowing with compressed air - back 'n forth in both directions, alot. You can't just hit it 30 seconds each way and keep going, you have to work at it. I have one of the long nozzle blowguns and keep a short piece of vacuum hose on the end for safety against poking the rad with it. If you use a garden hose you only wet the stuff down, it doesn't get it out, and because the water itself cools the rad down you might think you are doing some good but you're not, you'll be hot again in no time. I just recently did the battery box drop on mine to make it easier to get at more of the rad and to help airflow a little, the air filter on mine doesn't really disrupt airflow, just in the way a little for cleaning. With the battery dropped down it's so much easier to get the screens out now too. Once a year I remove the battery (not necessary anymore), the air cleaner and rad screens and do a good pressure washing very carefully - my washer is almost 5 gpm and will destroy things if not careful. I thought about the fine screens before but I don't think it will eliminate the problem - alot of the stuff I blow out is mostly very, very fine dusty stuff. Maybe someone will try it and post back on the results. My procedure has worked for me for almost 10 years and over 2000 hours now.

I guess I've been lucky. I've been able to get the stuff out with a garden hose. Good enough to go for a few weeks again anyway.

I will be trying air next time though to see if it's easier to clean without getting everything wet/sticky.

I wish I could find a long blowgun attachment around here somewhere ...

I have the same tractor. after a few years of mowing i had to take the raditor out to clean it with a pressue washer. But i think it is starting to clog up again:(

i do think that a finer screen on the front of thr cooler would be very helpful if it was easy to clean

Ed7: I am thinking about relocating the battery and perhaps the air intake if possible. I can't believe how much they cover the radiator.
You mentioned this, did you come up with any ideas?

Okay ... laugh all you want. I especially have this problem with my Montana 4340, always running for the air hose or the water hose ... my solution is a
16x20x1 furnance filter strapped to the front of the raditor screen ... when the temp gauge gets up I turn to the wind, pop the hood pull off the filter and in a short time a few slaps against the front tire the furnace filter is clean and back in busines.

Works for me.

Blueriver: I am not laughing. Anything that works easily and well we would all welcome. I think someone called this a boar's filter.

I'm not laughing either .... Now that I've gotten my battery out of the way I have room to try something like this on mine too and probably will. Good tip.

skipmarcy: Can you give more details/photos on the battery drop down or relocation? thanks

I'll try to get some pics the next day or two. Basically I took the existing pan and where the ears on each side go over the top of the frame members and bolt to those members and re-bent the pan narrower so it would slip down inbetween the frame members instead. I did all of this in my heavy 6" vise with a drilling hammer. I dropped the pan down to where it basically sits on top of the front axle crossmember and drilled new holes in the frame members to bolt the pan in with 5/16" bolts & nuts, I didn't tap like the originals were, just drilling holes there was enough work for me. I had to re-drill the two holes for the hold-down rods in the pan too, simple enough. The pan had an angled edge to it and I faced this forward so it pretty much covered the gap in front so a stick or something wouldn't poke up into the battery. The only materials used were the 4 bolts, washers and nuts and a little primer & paint.

Thanks - never thought of the furnace filter before, great idea! While not limited to Mahindra I sure wish these folk would design things better - why they dont have better screens, better fan flow, whatever to cope with the chaff is beyond me. Appreciate all who have taken time to post, ...Regards.
