Robert,

Making a guesstimate, and considering by "definition" assembled in the USA also "imports", I believe the only tractors actually manufactured in the US is by John Deere ~5000/8000/9000 series{some-not all}... would you say maybe 95% of the rest are imported into the US?

Of course, to really make the numbers meaningful, you have to include the EarthForce sales, too. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif That should take the Mahindra numbers down to something like half your original estimate, Muhammad. /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif

Heh of course... and with your recent purchase, EarthForce's chunk of the market grew considerably! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I believe those numbers are Worldwide sales...not just USA...

Do you have the 1999 JD annual report to double check? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Wouldn't surprise me either way.

Actually guys, I heard the same numbers back a couple of months on a radio show (AgriTalk FWIW). They said the figures represented:

Total US Sales (30-55 HP) - JD - Agco - CIH = X
Mahindra sales = 40% of X.

If this is right it means that there were only 4000 units of 30-55 HP tractors sold nation wide that were non-Big 3 (4000 x 40%=1600 units). I wouldn't worry yet, but as I've heard many times on this board, "Ever hear of a little company named Kubota?".

I think they would use whatever stat shined the brightest light on them in which case "Assembled in USA" would not be considered imports to Mahindra. Then they would just be comparing themselves to the grey market for their stats. I would like to see their stats that came up with that figure but I doubt they will show it.

Hhhmmmmm.....

How long has Mahindra been selling the Korean tractors? Now if we take these out of the equation(since they are compacts)and use the old IH designed tractors that are not considered compacts, this leaves what could be called small ag-tractors.

So if they are claiming this niche market segment as their area of 40% of the sales they would have to be only comparing theirselves to Tafe,Belarus,Zetor. If so once SD-F gets set up they are history. They would also have to be ruling out the American based companies that badge engineer like Long. Also the Majors would not be counted in their market either. So if they spun it this way it is the only way I could see their claims!!

Those 1999 stats are for Deere world-wide.

I like the part of the article that says that in Louisiana you can get a Mahindra with stripes in honor of the LSU "cheetahs". I dont think that BBC reporter is going to win the Pulitzer Prize.
