Mahindra MAX 28XL, Jinma 254 (Sold)
Looking at some used compact tractors (Mahindra MAX 28, Kubota B3030 and B7800, they all have loaders and backhoes, all hydro's, and around the same hours and price. I have both Mahindra and Kubota dealers near by. How do they compare? How's the loader lift weight compare? How do the backhoes compare (they all have manufacturer built for model attachments)?

You may as well google the specs or look on the manufacturer's websites -- no sense me doing it and regurgitating what's on the internet.

My neighbor has a Max 28, and it's a well made tractor with very good specs for its size. However, it is quite a bit smaller than the B3030/7800, and I believe the Max's backhoe is quite a bit less capable. The Max is a sub-compact while the B is a compact. The Max has some specs that cross over with larger tractors, but it's still fairly small with small tires, so I still consider it a sub-compact. It would compare better against the Kubota BX and smaller B.

S219, I think on the tire size you may be thinking about the Max25. The tires on a Max 28 are quite a bit larger, similar to the B3030/7800. I think you may be right on the backhoe having more power on the Kubota, but then again I think the Mahindra gets the nod on loader lift.

If looking for used, I think a lot of it would come down to the condition of the used tractors and price. You will be happy with either brand. I can list a spec or two making Mahindra look better, but then a Kubota fan can list a spec or two making the Kubota seem better. Overall, both are capable and reliable.

A source for Tractor technical information is TractorData.com - information on all makes and models of tractors

In the Kubota brand also look for a B2910. It's the earlier version of the B3030. In my opinion is a nicer tractor. When they upgraded, they left off some comfort options that they thought no one would miss. Telescoping steering wheel. Clutch pedal. Better seat.

As far as the B7800, it's a great basic tractor. It's missing most of the comfort features of the B3030 and B2910 and some very important mechanical features such as extendable 3pt lower arms, telescoping stabilizers, position control 3pt for example.

Sorry I can't help you with the Mahindra models. Happy shopping. Let us know what you buy.

I had my previous Kubota B2920 next to my neighbor's Max 28 once, and I seem to recall his rear tires looked smaller. Can't say I actually measured though.

Could be that you are right. I have not googled it all to check, but for sure the Max 25 tires are quite a bit smaller. I think the Max 28 uses a 12-16.5 rear R4 tire. The ag tire is a little taller.

might want to check that. 12-16.5 is what Kubota uses on subcompacts.

Neil, you know Kubota's way better than I do. I assume you are referring to the BX models. I just googled though, at your suggestion, and the BX25 shows a 26x12-12 rear industrial tire. That is 26" tall on a 12" rim. The 12-16.5 Industrial on the Max28 is about 33" tall on a 16.5" rim. (It depends on brand, some 12-16.5's are closer to 32"). In any event, that is 6"-7" taller, and that is a very noticeable size difference.

Please clarify what I am missing here.

I was looking into a Kubota B3200 and Mahindra Max 28 and it looks like the Max has the same sizes tires as the Kubota, weighs more, has better loader lift than the B. The Kubota has better specs for the backhoe though. Anyone have any experience with either tractor? How well does the MAX backhoe dig? The Mahindra has a much better price too.

Ended up buying a new MAX 28 XL hydro with mower, loader and backhoe. I felt I got a good deal on it. Will be delivered this Friday!
