I suppose that means that we have to put all the stupid people in the diesel duallys.

Somehow that's even more frightening.

I miss the days when a pickup had a vinyl bench seat, rubber floor mats instead of carpeting, and a four speed on the floor.

Floor mats?? Four speed???

My first pickup, 63 ford F100, cost new $1899 same as a VW bug. (I bought it used for about a quarter of that). No radio, no cig lighter, single speed wipers, no armrests on the doors, 3-speed on the column (and first gear was geared too tall), and the inside of each door was a simple sheet metal panel with no fabric. Simple beam front axle about the same as a 2wd farm tractor. 223ci 6 cylinder of course. After I had abused it for several years it took me a month to find a buyer for it at my asking price: $175. It ran great but the appearance seemed to put people off for some reason.

And that's all the truck some people need for a seldom-used farm truck. I wish I had one now!

Me too! I think Mahindra is missing out on that part of the market. These trucks when they come are going to be pretty well loaded up. Complete with the auto.

What happens when you get it out on the freeway with a 45 mph lower speed limit towing 5000 lbs behind a that tiny little diesel is a completely different story...

A commercially rated 2 liter diesel typically puts out around 140 hp these days. (160hp for passenger cars) 5000 lbs (2270 kg) is just peanuts when you have a bit of torque. My 2.5 TDI puts out 350 N/m and 140 hp, i just assume the torque rating of the Mahindra is lower. With a speed limit of 90 km/h for vehicles towing a trailer, more power would be just luxury in a flat country like Holland. Especially when the Mahindra has a 6 speed auto.

The Mahindra weighs a ton less, which means it has a ton more cargo capacity within the same GCVW with the given horsepower...

I went a couple of days to germany/belgium/luxembourg and went cruising effortless at 140 km/h (cruise control) uphill on the steep hills near Verviers and Liege. I ALLMOST rear ended a caravan, because a Fiat Panda (1.2 liter gas engine) was pulling it uphill in 1st gear at around 30 km/h !! The speed difference between me and him was more than 100 km/h which i didnt anticipate on.
Then i decided to only drive in the right hand lane when going uphill, to avoid these little mosquitos, the speed difference is just dangerous as even trucks are overtaking these little cars towing a caravan...

That's beginning to sound like the sales of my '09 VW Jetta TDI SW. I waited for 3 months for it to come in. But it is worth it.

newbury: Love the Sportwagen. Im going to look strongly at one when the time comes to get a new car. We used to have a 96 jetta diesel, thing was amazing on fuel, wish we still had it.

In conversation with a Mahindra Tractor dealer, I was told that the vehicles will not come through that channel.

I understand they signed up a bunch of ex-chrysler dealers plus there are some "new" dealerships as well.

I wonder if this may have something with launching the Nano in the US? Pure speculation on my part, but it would be interesting. There both Indian made, with excellent mileage and are being aimed at value minded individuals.

Dont forget that the Nano, despite being ridiculously cheap, did real well in the Euro NCAP tests. Which is amazing for such a cheap vehicle.

I wish the auto industry executives would read this thread and realize the need for a small diesel pickup. Like many others have mentioned, a tuff little truck that has good economy and without all the bells and whistles. What is bad is that these are already offered in other countries and have been for decades. Our "Big Three" and others are so out of touch with reality there is no wonder they are in the shape they are now.

Sorry for the rant, but these companies might do a little better if they put some real world people on the payroll, and did a little more extensive market research.

I just calculated the ratings back to metric (for my comparison)
It takes 140 hp from a 2.2 liter Diesel, with 350 Nm of torque. Thats identical torque and hp to my 1998 Volvo S70 2.5 TDI. The 5000 pounds tow rating Mahindra mentions, is a piece of cake with my S70 in our flat country, and with slightly higher differential reduction it would neither notice hills at the speed limit of 90 km/h (i assume the Mahindra has this gear ratio)
The 30 mpg is 1 liter on 12.7 km: Thats nothing special with European light commercial vehicles, no doubt Mahindra will keep that promise.

When this Mahindra becomes a seller, no doubt Dodge will come with the QSB 4.5 in the 1500 and 2500 and Ford will put the 200hp 3.2 liter inline 5 Diesel of their European commercial van, the Transit, in the F150 and F250 trucks.
