Mailbox Weight

The issues with rural roadside mailboxes isn't the box itself but the kids that seem to get some sort of twisted enjoyment in vandalizing them.
Kids in CT would takes dad's plow truck out during the winter and would break off most of the mail box posts on one side of the street. I replaced post and added a 9 foot lolly column ( steel tube filled with concrete) on either side of the post with 4 feet buried in the frozen ground. Amazing how the kids managed to always miss my mail box after that.

I went thru the "beat up mailbox" scenario several years ago. For whatever reasons - the kids quit beating on it with their BB bats.

My current box is plastic. The lid/door has a tab at the top. It fits in a groove on the top of the box proper. Seems to work well.

Years ago in high school, I took my grandfather's plow truck to an evening class. I always kept it angled while driving down the road to limit how far out it stuck past the width of the truck.

I had a tractor trailer pass me and it blew me over a touch. As I corrected I saw something flicker on the right side of the truck

Looked out the mirrors but didn't see anything odd

The next morning, o dark 30, the phone rings. It's grandpa asking if I knew where the blew paper box came from that was in the bed of his pickup.

When asked, I told him I had know idea, and someone probably tossed it in the back of the truck while I was in class.

Later that day, driving through the area where I had gotten tossed by the tractor trailer, i realized I had clipped someone's paper box with the snow plow.

It was about 10 years later when I finally told my dad where the blue news paper box came from

I see the shoe is now on the other foot. An interesting trip down memory lane

@ning, I understand the skepticism, and I waffled a bit before buying one, but I can attest these are a whole different ballgame. The Ft. Knox mailboxes are incredibly strong. 1/4" thick steel, welded. That's like a 12" channel with end plates. The one pictured weighs 98lbs. I do not know if you could drive an excavator onto one, but perhaps so. I would bet that you could certainly lower one on to one of their mailboxes.

We have not had a successful mail theft since we installed a Ft. Knox mailbox, and there have been a few attempts. Since then, about a third of our neighbors have upgraded to their mailboxes to these Ft. Knox mailboxes. Could someone take a grinder to one or try to steal the whole thing? Of course, but they would be hanging out in full view for more than a little while trying to get into the mailbox. We all have some great videos of idiots trying to break in, and as they try to figure out a way in, we all have gotten some nice close ups. Nobody has gotten in yet.

All the best,

Peter

Magnetic latch?
We have the basic rural route plastic mailbox as seen below. It came with the property.

It was too close to the road too. So, I moved it back 1-1/2 feet.
I don't need the county plow to whack it nor the mail truck to stick out into a full lane of busy rural highway.

Next, I inspected the latch. Sure enough it had the thin chrome coated plate. I went with a thicker replacement. Next, swapped in a stronger magnet. Our winds here have reached over 70mph in the mid-west before it hits Chicago 2hrs away.
