She looks like a beast,, :) I've been burning wood for years and always use a stack temp. gauge so I can tell how the stove is running.. for me 100 to 150 deg. and the stack is warm enough to start closing it down,, I usually run a stack temp between 250 and 350.. mine is an airtight but like someone else said not many of them really are,,, I would never try to smother a fire by closing things up.. You will get smoke back,, you want to regulate the fire by the amount of wood you put in it,, 20 below night I fill her up,, going to be 25 above about half full..

It's all in the learning what our stove wants no 2 are the same and different dryness of wood or different types of wood burn differently..

Good luck to you as for the divorce been there done that a few times,, A good lawyer is the only thing that helps ..

1 - How do I "put the fire out" or let it go out in a fashion that will prevent this smoking issue?
2 - How do I clear up the smell of burning/smoke?
3 - Once, on Wed. before Thanksgiving, I had issues lighting the fire and it smoked out the door for a while, even setting of the smoke detector in basement. Is this "stack effect" and should I open the tiny window in basement when lighting the fire? one other time I had it smoke a little because I loaded up with logs before it was really burning...
4 -What else am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance,
David

I think the answers to many of these questions will "depend"

My wife and I have a similar situation with our home. Prior owner (now deceased) had installed a wood furnace that heats air and distributes it using the central air / heat pump vents. Bottom line is: we called a local HVAC contractor who did a full inspection, checked chimney, and made sure all of the ventilation baffles were set correctly for heating operation. For us this was well worth it and they answered our questions.

For an airtight wood burner to work it needs to get combustion air from somewhere, so generally it is from a duct run from outside to the firebox somehow; engineered in obviously.
Looking at your stove pipe and how heavy duty it is and how far away and how high it is from the roof, could it just be burned out with a roaring fire from the furnace? It might be scary to look at but so what if a few feet if flame comes out of the stack?

13 pages later, I hope that you're finding some insight. It's hard to tell from an online pic how things really are...

You might be able to get your local fire dept to do an inspection and give you some suggestions.
Just another idea...

I hope that things start looking up for you soon.
