Making a ditch crossing

Nads-o-steel on that slope! Nice work, too.
I have a similar project in mind, but no where near as challenging as yours.
Now that I've seen what you accomplished, I'm thinking my project looks a lot more realistic than I had originally thought it was.

Good Work
But I'd going to guess that you will need twice the capacity. Lay logs and any concrete rubble you can find on the inlet side to help prevent washout. Whats the plan when the culvert gets plugged?

I think it'll be alright. If it pooled to the top of the fill it would cover an acre of ground. Draining pastureland I'm not concerned with debris plugging the culvert. Plan B would be water goes over fill. :confused3:

Willie's one lucky pooch! I don't think the coyote wanted to stick around because of you and the tractor more so than because of Willie. I'm glad he's OK, not many dogs can go toe to toe with a coyote.

You know your stream best, but there's a culvert that crosses the road near my house with banks just like yours. We had a flash flood at the start of the summer, the week after the road was re-paved, and it was washed out, cut the road in half. They took their sweet time fixing it (at least if felt that way when you had to drive around every day) but they upped it to a 10' culvert! I don't know how big it was before, I'm thinking 6', but the stream is dry most of the year.

That's how I have been with this one. I've had the culvert for a couple years. Would go look at the project and talk myself out of it. Looking back, it wasn't that bad. A month after I finished it I bought this scraper. Yep, that's how I roll..... ;)

Yep, been around dogs and coyotes all my life. I knew the coyotes plan when he got on his back. Fortunately for Willie it was a yearling and not an old male.

Yeah, I may be all wrong on this crossing. Time will tell. Basing my decision on the history of the drainage ditch I don't see it overflowing. But hey, I'll post pictures of the aftermath if it washes out!!! :)

It'll take a lot of water to wash that out. Weather seems more unpredictable and extreme, around me anyway. I'm sure you'll be fine, that culvert will take a lot of water, I'd just make sure it's clear. Once the water gets to the top, nothing will stop it.

I used to have a smaller HST tractor. That thing scared the beJesus outta me on steep terrain. Almost impossible to exactly control your stops/starts. A gear drive with a hydraulic clutch and hydraulic brakes is MUCH safer. My tractor has filled rear tires, plus weights, plus cast iron centers in the rear wheels and the BB weighs around 1300lbs. No worries. I drove down into that ditch carrying that culvert. The culvert is 24". I added additional length after I got it in the hole. Ended up with 60'. The top of the fill is 20' wide. Guessing it's 18' high. I think I have enough freeboard that if the culvert can't keep up for a short period of time it'll pool the water against the fill until it can empty. Drains pasture land which will help a lot also. Speaking of the dog. One day I was driving back there to haul more dirt. Willie goes everywhere I go. As we drove across a CRP field a coyote ran out into the neighbors grazed pasture. Willie was in hot pursuit. When he'd catch up the coyote would turn and nip at him, then try to run off. Each time it would run Willie would attack. After a couple rounds of that the coyote said "okay, I guess we are going to fight" and it layed on it's back all curled up. Willie is thinking, this is too easy. He piles on. Immediately all Willie wanted to do was get away. The coyote wasn't making a sound but Willie sure was. After a few seconds of yelping the coyote let him go. He hauled butt straight to me. Fight over. Coyote trotted away. I just got my phone camera going for the escape run back to the tractor. :) <img src="http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/files/projects/399588-making-ditch-crossing-20140710_153058-jpg"/>
Nice work, glad you shared the picks, give me some ideas of similar situation on my place. Wish Willie had my great Pyrenese to help, she would have killed the coyote! LUTT

Willie has such a soft bite that he has to work at it to kill a rabbit. He couldn't draw blood on a coyote if he tried. As someone mentioned earlier, he was just being cocky because I was there which also made the coyote just want to get away. I was laughing so hard I could barely get a picture!!!!

That is funny, don't know what we would do without our companions! LUTT

I inherited Willie from my brother. He abandoned him at our farm. He wouldn't ride in a vehicle or come inside a building. Now I have to scold him to make him stay home if I leave and don't take him. He also gladly sleeps in the warm shop inside his doghouse. Never complains or takes advantage of me in any situation. Great friend. :)
