Correct. But if it does fail..and was installed correctly.. your estate may be able to dig into the rops manufactures pockets if there was a design flaw... etc.

My point was that you have your best chances with an oem/designed/certified rops, as opposed to an untested structure.

Not to downplay anything.. but there is a huge difference between nascar racing and tractor usage. ( both can be dangerous.. no argument there.. Id guess if you look at the number of farmer vs the number of farm accidents, and then look at nascar drivers and accidents.. I'll bet you come up with a higher accident per capita ratio with nascar... )

It depends. If it was a comercial venture, and you let an employee use a tractor with no rops.. I'm guessing OSH will have your hide pinned up to a tree, while that workers family and lawyers pillage your estate.

Now.. if you take a tractor with no rops.. and then modify it and add some sort of structure.. sell it,, and then that person gets hurt. AFAIK.. you may be responsible for modifying the tractor.

To get around this I've even seen people sell their ho-made rops seperate and not attached to the tractor, and sell it as 'scrap metal', to try to avoid the rops liability.

Good. I'm sure all the comments here are only due to the fact that we _are_ concerned for your safety, and not because we just want to rib you /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Well u may know what u r doing more than I. Now if your dead set on doing this(pun intended) after you engineer your system; why not take the part u took off the mower to a fabrication shop and have them duplicate it? Then put your mower back together so u don't get killed on it and your wife can win a settlement if you do! Then put ur system on ur tractor. I don't think it would cost ya very much.... It is also possible that they could use a heavier rectangular tubing?

OK Randini, your point is well made...................
Let me reiterate........I don't think they make a heavier tubing than this, as I've already said, it appears to be well made from very heavy wall, high strength steel tubing, mandrel bent, gussetted and reinforced - already. All I'm doing is drilling a few holes and making a couple of small bends to make things line up. Then I'll reinforce as needed to make sure it's sturdy. I'm mounting it the same way Yanmar does, using their mounting points and bolts. Now how would a welding shop do this any better? I have the same TIG welder they do, I'm using the same tubing (or better!) that they would and so on. You're saying that at least someone could sue someone else if it failed?
Funny, I would never dream of suing someone because something stupid I did caused my demise, maybe it's just how I was raised, but I believe in personal responsibility...............

I agree with you on the suing issue jagmandave. No one wants to take personal responsibility these days .The rops that you are going to install maybe better than no rops at all .

No u got me wrong.. I say duplicate it and then you have rops on both your machines........If you can duplicate it yourself ok... I just don't think you should dismantle a working system but it is all yours and it's a free country.....

I got you now, of course, I've already modified parts of it now...

I have to agree that the 1602 models need some type of ROPS. They are probably the narrowest of the Yanmar greys.

Here's what it looks like now, if you refer back to the pic in my first post you can see that I just increased the angle of the bends to bring the attachment points inboard to match up to the width of the Yanmar's case. I've also made some additional brackets that will attach to the rear of the Yanmar's case and provide additional support, but I'm doubting whether I need them at this point. I still need to straighten out one more spot that causes the ROPS to tilt too far forward, where it interefers with the seat placement, I'm plannnning on doing that over the next couple of days, then give it a good coat of paint and mount her up.........
