Do sugar beets work?

How much juice can you get from a sugar beet? I'm not sure if sugar beets can be pressed for juice or if they have to be ground and heat processed. I think anything with juice that contains sugar can be made into syrup. After all, Karo brand syrup is made from corn, I believe.

I saw in a sunday paper insert (relish.com) that the last american cane syrup is STEEN's. It comes in a yellow can. It (cane syrup) is placed on slow foods US food in danger of extinction.
