ARPlante don't take this the wrong way, I mean no disrespect but do you have a "in" with the utility company ? Around here our utility company will not even look at a machine unless it has a minimum of 150 hp, and by minimum they actually mean if you don't have 180 hp or more don't bother bidding. They specifically specify a 8' cutting head, rubber tire articulating tractor type carrier etc..... Hydro Ax or other, Tigercat :), Barko etc. In any case you do great work and love the pics.

No disrespect taken at all Westshore. I even look at this picture and know that the 50D is way too small for that size ROW. The only "in" I have with the power company out here is through several tree companies that sub me for machine work. While a larger machine would be more efficient, the utilities and the tree companies do not want to pay for one. I'm gearing up for a Deere 160D with a Dennis Cimaf head, but convincing everyone to bring one out on the ROW is like pulling teeth. An articulated machine would be nice, but for the majority of our terrain that type of machine would not work well (ie won't get traction and will have to maneuver around rocks too much). That is why excavators are used more out here than larger wheeled machines. Next to excavators the largest thing on ROWs are tracked skidsteers. :confused2:

FWIW, the big utility company here (Duke) used big equipment under their high tension lines and a hand crew under the distribution to house line. But the rural coop in the next county used CTLs with small heads like in the thread here. The coop also used a helicopter with saw blades hanging below to trim branches along the edges.

I have a few minutes of downtime here so I thought I'd share a few more pictures.

This project took place early this year in southern New Hampshire. We had some heavy windstorms that coupled with a historical amount of water, led to a lot of trees being brought down. The project shown here consisted of removing 2 trees that fell on or near the house, and then clearing a half acre lot that had over over 30 blown down trees in it.

So first off, the sight that greeted me the first day on the job:

Here we are a day or so into the job. Nothing like working on a lot of trees under tension while in a swamp that is too small for a larger machine. Thankfully, the compact excavator and thumb made the project a lot easier.

Getting closer to the end of the project- still pulling out a lot of wood and grinding up all the tops with the mulcher:
