Unfortunately a similar thing happened near here a few days ago. A 67 year old gentleman was standing on the ground and reached up to somehow start his tractor which was in gear and on high idle. According to the local newspapers, both the rear tractor tire and the disc it was pulling ran over the guy who was pronounced dead when the ambulance arrived. Based on the description I have to imagine it was a fairly large farm tractor. If I can find a link to the story I'll post it.

A good reason for NOT bypassing interlocked transmission safety start switches..

This is in my neck of the woods, I thought the same thing when I heard the news report. Kind of like those guns that "just went off" on their own.
tHESE TWO HAPPENED HERE.
A man whose tractor malfunctioned and ran over him emerged without any broken bones, Washington County Sheriff Larry Mincks said Tuesday.
Daniel Mason, 33, of 879 Grindstone Drive, Marietta, was listed in stable condition at Marietta Memorial Hospital Tuesday night, a nursing supervisor said.
The sheriff's office and Warren Volunteer Fire Department squad responded around 2:14 p.m. Tuesday to the reported accident at Mason's property on Grindstone Drive.
Mason was using the tractor in a cornfield when it stopped working, Mincks said. When he got off of it to check the machine, it started rolling again, the sheriff said.
"He jumped back on it and tried to get it stopped, and that's when he fell and landed and it rolled over him," Mincks said.
"It ran over him completely; however, it did not break any bones," he said.
Mincks said Mason was shaken up, but might have avoided more serious injury due to the ground being soft because he had been planting.
Riding mower overturns on hill
Less than an hour before Mason's accident, deputies and members of the Fearing Volunteer Fire Department squad responded to an accident in which a man's riding mower overturned while he was using it on a hillside.
Mincks said John Nichols, age not available, of 1020 Caywood Road, Marietta, was mowing on his property when the accident happened around 1:33 p.m.
He was still being evaluated in Memorial's emergency room Tuesday evening.

It seems for every ONE of these I read there are 4 or 5 questions of the general form;
"How do I defeat the [clutch, seat, neutral, PTO, whatever] switch ?"
or
"Lookit, I can walk beside my tractor and toss stuff in the bucket now that I've defeated X, a little steering correction once in a while and it rolls along right where I want it."

Use to do that with the hay truck, stuff it in granny low and bungee the steering wheel to the door.

I had a friend get run over year before last by a MF TO-30. He stopped to move something in his sloped yard and it started rolling, he tried to catch it and the back tire knocked him down and went over him(up his right side, missing his head). He was very sore, very bruised and has a new respect for tractors.;) He says if it happens again he will just stand and wave goodbye.:p

I don't have an real steep slopes but when I do stop on a slope I turn sideways to it and turn the front wheels up hill. It can't roll either way that way. Then I set the brake besides. Call me paranoid.

I just have to wonder if he had disabled the neutral safety switch? It obviously cranked up in gear. Maybe it was an old tractor that didn't have that feature?

It sounds like he jumped across the solenoid. If you jump across the solenoid your safety switches become ineffective. That goes for your car and truck as well. Most people don't realize that. The safety only works if you are using the key switch to crank the starter. Age of vehicle makes no difference.
I can't say I have never jumped across a bad solenoid to keep running during the busy season which is not a good reason. A school mate of mine had his grandfather ran over during planting season jumping across a solenoid. We also had a county employee do it; he survived but will never be the same.

;) done that... at the end of the field, hop in, swing her around and then get back out on the other side and start throwing more bales.
