Richard,

You'll be amazed at how resilient dogs can be. Just be patient, work with her and she'll come around.

5 years ago we rescued an abused 1 year old Newfoundland, within 2 weeks she was back to what you would expect - friendly, outgoing, obedient and just an all around joy to be with. She was shy with strangers for awhile and cringed when you went to stroke her head, but that also cleared up with in 4 - 6 weeks.

We were told she was food aggressive, bad with kids, bad with cats, destructive, etc. We know for a fact she caused thousands of dollars in damage to the utility room where she was confined. We were nervous and kept her crated the first night, and that's the last time she was ever in her cage.

About a year later we rescued 2 cats, they think they are dogs, they sleep with her and they often eat out of her dog dish. Our boys were 4 and 5 at the time and 3 of them have been inseparable from day 1. As for being destructive, she has chew toys that are 5 years old.

I'm sure your situation will turn out just as well as ours did.

Gee over here they'd get some fine.

Good to see they take that sort of thing seriously over there.

this whole thing is sickening just to read. We all have our favorites whether it is a child, cup of coffee, or an animal. we lost our Australian stock dog to age. Looked and looked for near four months and came across an animal shelter league which just happen to have a puppy that we liked. After this rescue league called our neighbors, our vet that we've used over 20 years, they call us to come and see the dog.Over a 100 mile drive. I am happy to say we came home with this pup. He's big, about 3/4 Dobie and remainder Great Dane. This rescue league brought 31 puppies from W. Va all the way back to cape cod area. He is now approx 7/8 months old, gives us great enjoyment and I'm happy we have him. I can imagine how I would act if someone threw this pup in front of a car. I know I would see "black" and whatever happened thereafter, happens.

It seems to me that we do the same thing to homosapiens in this country.

My wife and I are doing all we can. We have in addition to our 12 percheron mares, about 50 cats, 8 dogs (all are strays or abused except one which happens to be a Blue Heeler) and of course my wife and I. Our vet bill is more than our farm payment

Whaaaaaaat????? /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Not on purpose, my friend........if you mean the homeless and destitute. There's a verrrrrrry long personal and unique history associated with those individuals who choose to live the life of a homeless person.....and I've never heard of a homeless person who is forceably put into that state. The government and/or society DOES NOT ACTIVELY BANISH a person to misery and death that's analogous to the poor dog's fate in this lead story. On the contrary, there are countless programs available throughout every major urban area in this country to assist these homeless people and to provide them with shelter and food if they choose to take advantage of them.

So, to axiomatically suggest that American society commonly kills its homeless in the same way this poor dog was killed is altogether not true. Shame on you!!!!!

Did he say 50 (Fifty) Cats. One more than 49? That has got to be insane. My father in law on their farm can't have cats. They just get some disease. He has to keep the cats away for a couple of years to get rid of this disease. The cats bring it on themselves and they pass it on to each other.

Trying to help them is one thing but 50 cats is another. Animal Human Society would just love this one

I wouldn't hammer on someone for loving and caring for animals. If they take care of their animals and make sure they have food, water, medical care and love then there is not a thing wrong with that. They are on a farm where I assume the animals have plenty of space to do their own thing, over 200 acres should be about enough. What is the difference between a farmer having 50 cats or 100 sheep or cattle. If you take care of them they should be all right. I'm not a cat lover myself, I wouldn't have one cat, but if they want to take on the responsibility of taking care of a herd of cats then that's their right as long as they are doing it in a humane way.

Craig,

Im not hammering on him for having 50 cats. If he can take care of them fine. But realistically can someone take care of 50 cats. Cats carry diseases. Diseases that get on a farm and you can't get rid of that disease unless you get rid of the cats for a two year period. We have a cat and a dog and take good care of them. I have read so many horror stories of people that have massive amounts of pets and they just can't take proper care of them and the human society has to take them away to just be put a sleep. I believe there is some laws regarding the amount of pets one household can have at least in Minnesota.

But again, if he can take care of them fine, I guess I was just somewhat shocked and only could think about all the cats running around ones legs.
