That's the truth. Growing up in Minnesota I saw how much it was taught that the US Civil War was about slavery (and how much the northern state's involvement in the slave trade was omitted), and from talking to coworkers here in Alabama it seems that in the southern states it was(is?) taught that it was about states rights. ..... and in Missouri the explanation I heard from a parent of a college friend was that after the court decisions were made what really caused it to become a fight/war was the "simple" question of "who's going to pay to implement the court decision?"

Three different perspectives on one event....
Bigotry and racism knows no geographical boundaries.

End of the day, the North didn't need slaves as bad as the south to make money in the US, so the "North" apparently held itself to a higher standard per human rights.

What people forget is that some of our founding fathers who wrote "all men are created equal" owned slaves.

The added reality is in some areas of the world, it's more about religious sects where your bigotry lies.

Yet, over 150 years later many southerners still hold grudges against "yankees", none of whose parents/grandparents were born when the civil war took place and many whose ancestors hadn't even immigrated yet!
I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you. There is very little hate for "yankees" in the South. There is a huge amount of hate for "rebels" throughout America as anyone can see as Southern statues are torn down by the hundreds, schools, streets and places named after southerners are renamed and southern cemeteries are vandalized. People are taught to be ashamed of being White and that there are no White heroes including all of our presidents.

I apologize if my remarks are not pc but I had to be truthful on this subject.

The War Between the States was about each side defending their constitution. One was patterned after the other and many differences are clearly spelled out.

Article IV Section 3(3) The Confederate States may acquire new territory; and Congress shall have power to legislate and provide governments for the inhabitants of all territory belonging to the Confederate States, lying without the limits of the several states; and may permit them, at such times, and in such manner as it may by law provide, to form states to be admitted into the Confederacy. In all such territory, the institution of negro slavery as it now exists in the Confederate States, shall be recognized and protected by Congress, and by the territorial government: and the inhabitants of the several Confederate States and Territories, shall have the right to take to such territory any slaves lawfully held by them in any of the states or territories of the Confederate states.

So the war was about preservation of property even if it meant people.

I've got to ask, what history are you refering to that schools are changing?

When my boys were in grade school and we helped them with their homework, I've had never seen anything taught in social studies that left me scratching my head thinking "what are they teaching" per history. This was only a couple of years ago.

However, this common core math with basic addition, multiplication and division was beyond stupid IMO and I couldn't understand why they would teach it.

For those of you that don't have kids anymore in school and aren't use to "common core" math, I think this guy kind of nails it using a simple multiplication example IMO how the old method compares to the new method.

My brain says 35 times 12 is 35 times 10 plus 70 is 420. Done.

If I have to write it down, I do it like the guy in the video.

The newer way shown in the video makes sense, too, but sure seems to take longer. But it's probably easier to check for mistakes in your work VS just knowing the answer and getting it wrong.

I will agree with you to a certain point, but the reality is you can only jam so much world and country history during the school day.

...
Agreed. My kids know very little about the civil war and WWII and nothing about WWII. They only had so much time to learn dates and events, but not much time to go into what lead up to the wars, whereas I played with union and confederate solidiers, horses and cannons and steam trains, as well as WWII stuff where I had U.S., Japanese, and German armies and all of their associated tanks, trucks, cannons, etc... with my father.

Looking back on things, I never remember learning about the Korean war in school. From what I heard it was a short conflict after WWII. Only until I met my wife's uncle, who was a Korean war vet, did I start to find interest in it through his few stories in his later life. I've read up on it a lot since then. Brutal.

So are you saying that there's only one side to any story? I'll venture a guess that the story of "how the west was won" (for example) would differ considerably from the Indians' viewpoint vs the settlers' version. Whose is correct? Most likely the truth lies somewhere in the middle.
About 10 years ago, we went on a vacation out west. One of our stops was at the Little Big Horn National Monument. There was a park ranger from Texas there, who gave us a talk about the things that lead up to the battle, and some things that happened afterwards. He told the story from 4 different perspectives. Two white men, and two native Americans. He did a really nice job of giving us background on one of them, then he'd say "We'll come back to him in a bit." Then he went on to the next, and so on. Then he tied them all together. It was quite interesting to see 4 different perspectives of the same event.

One of them was named Black Elk.

A very interesting person. He was at the Little Big Horn. Toured Europe with Buffalo Bill. Got lost. Toured more of Europe with another wild west show. Met up again with Buffalo Bill the next year. Returned to the U.S. Survived the massacre at Wounded Knee.... just a lot to go through as a person. You could dig into his story and spend weeks reading.

My disappointed is with the decline in integrity, honor, respect, love for one another and work ethics. Any comforts I have is because I worked for it. I do not deserve anything and it is not anyone else's responsibility to insure I have those things.

I have to provide for my family as is my responsibility. I help those that truly need it and pray for everyone else. I raised 3 boys that do the same.

The decline has nothing to do with money or politics. It is a issue of the heart.
You need a better class of friends.

It seems like every week now I read of a child under 12 shooting someone and even more often hear of them bringing loaded guns to school. As if we didn't have enough problems with teenage hoodlums and gang members having shootouts in crowds of people, now we even have to worry about 8 year olds.

I couldn't wait till I retired to go more often to some of the great restaurants and lounges in New Orleans and now that I have the time and money to do it, I'm getting to afraid to even go in the city anymore.
Hospitals are installing metal detectors at ER entrances. With 5 million new gun owners last year alone, what did you expect?
