Bottom line since kids were 8,9 you have to be 10 to go to juvenile detention. In S.C. "the hand of one is the hand of all" so both charged with involuntary manslaughter since their intention wasn't to kill the poor man.
Kids released to parents custody.
I bet the widow would be able to sue both kid's parents if she wanted.
Not much else I could find, but everyone knows young boys: "Betcha can't hit that tractor" probably what happened, something that will haunt them forever.
All kids do stupid things.

I am hoping it was an accident and not intentional.

When I was about 10 I remember shooting an arrow straight up and it landing within a few feet of a homeowner mowing his lawn.

Accidentally hit the operator when just shooting at the tractor he was on. Din't have any where else to aim? An 11 YO kid shot my truck (windshield) with a BB gun after missing a bird on a branch above it. Bigger target is easier to hit than small critter. Some kids ...

I was with a bunch of friends as a kid throwing darts at a wooden shed. We got bored so wanted to see how high up we could throw. One kid threw, then looked at us...dart landed right between his eyes! He's early 70s now, still has little round scar.
I'm telling you! Boys do stupid things...girls not so much.
It's amazing we're still alive (most of us).

When I was 16 I got shot at by a 9 year old neighbor kid with a .22. As soon as he ran out of ammo I ran him down and started to thump him hard. He got away, but the rifle did not. That .22 never shot again. I tossed it into the shop stove and burned it. The kid's dad was upset, so I offered to beat the crap out of him too. I was a big kid, varsity football lineman, and yeah, I have a temper.

My best friends' older brother was throwing a baseball up as high as he could and catching it. On one throw, he tossed it, my friend said something to him, he took his eyes off the ball for a split second to look at his brother, looked back up and DONK! right between the eyes! He was OUT!!! I ran in and got his mom. He had a lump the sized of an egg and shortly had two black eyes. He turned out OK. Ironically, he became an anesthesiologist and then went into pain management.
