Man suffers injuries while fighting off 3 attacking coyotes (Colorado)

So lets get this straight. A guy is walking to work because his car broke down a few weeks ago (shows integrity) in the dark through an apartment complex in a populated area and gets attacked by three coyotes, mauled pretty badly, and you guys call him a moron. Even if he was armed on his way to work he'd probably get fired when he got there because most companies have a no firearms/knives on company property policy. Some states allow you to keep your firearm locked in your car at your employer's parking lot, but he didn't have a car, now did he? I really wonder how many of you could draw and fire with three coyotes chewing your limbs in the dark. Or would you just start blasting away in an apartment complex at the first strange noise you heard? Good grief fellas, think about what you say before you say it.

Well stated. The guy was walking to work, he didn't call in with some excuse. He has a family and a job, seems upstanding to me. He ran into some wild animals and they reacted. That's why they call them wild animals. We keep pushing into animal's territory and then act surprised when this happens. People need to secure their garbage, not leave pet food out, pick up fruit from trees and rethink having outside cats so as not to attract wild animals.

Probably because they get hunted just like they do here. A 'yote will vanish as soon as it becomes aware a human is nearby. Being in a populated area these coyotes probably had no fear of people and were used to them. Pretty big step attacking a human though. Wonder if they were raiding the garbage or the local cat population and he surprised/'cornered' them?

Could be, I don't know of anyone that actually hunts them, but if given the chance just about anyone will shoot one. Yeas ago, my sons tried hunting them, but never saw any, very elusive animals.

There are a lot of coyotes shot in this area. Some by folks who think its sport, some cause they do kill spring calves and others when the skin prices are up. I have a lot of coyotes on and around my property. I've never, in 32 years, EVER had a coyote come towards me; much less stand his ground. They are always up and movin' on. And yes, its probably because they get shot at a lot.

After being followed for several hundred yards on a trail in a canyon at Mesa Verde, by a large critter that we were not able to identify (it never came close enough), I now always carry a hardwood walking stick when on a trail. I did have a conceal carry pistol, but the ability to keep something back 3 feet and deliver a good blow can be very useful for a variety of smaller critters. Firing your weapon is prohibited (you would have to "prove" it was an emergency) and avoidance is the goal of any planner...

It would not surprise me that this happened in the same area where the gov spent a fortune investigating "hazing" tactics on the coyotes instead of simply shooting them. The video shows footage of coyotes running around without concern in a residential area, but don't know how it is related to the story.

Last summer I was on the riding mower about 3:00 pm. It was a bright sunny day, a big coyote came through my yard about twenty feet from me. There are lots of coyotes here, we hear them at night but we had never seen them.

Good lesson...wild animals aren't here to be our friends.

When times are tough, and small prey animals are scarce due to an expanding 'yote population(Due to a lack of hunting/trapping), they will pack up and use pack tactics to take down larger prey.

They do it in winter and spring here, and take down deer quite regularly.

Granted our eastern 'Yotes run 40-60lbs, and aren't the 30lb western runts, but 3 30lb 'yotes is still enough to take down small adults and children.
They get brazen and lose respect of anything that isn't a threat, as it is their nature. If it is not a threat, it is food. It really is nothing more than a risk to benefit equation to them.

Ours get a pass, as long as they steer clear of the house and barns. I like having them thumping rabbits, ground squirrels, woodchucks, moles and mice, so I don't have to. All the same, I still end up shooting and trapping half a dozen every year, that choose to push their luck.

The wife has had packs of 2-3 jackaling her when walking to old rail bed, several times, and we have shot a couple that have gotten too close, while working in the field. The brave ones need to be educated, and the wary ones need their caution reinforced regularly, or they WILL come right up to dwellings and take the risks.

If the communitarian moonbats of Colorados citys, refuse to allow for eradication, they had better get used to a kid or adult getting mauled now and then.

A couple of summers ago I was out back of the house on a dark night getting ready to start a fire for some guests we were expecting and I heard some rustling in the edge of the woods next to where I was standing. I flicked on the flashlight I had and a pair of coyotes were chowing down on some kitchen trash, egg shells and veg trimmings, my wife had tossed into the woods earlier that day, I stood there no more than eight feet away shining the light on the two, a male and female judging by their relative size, for a good four minutes until they decided they had enough and they just wandered slowly off into a stand of nearby pines. Prior to that summer we always had some feral cats around, but have not seen any since that year and I suspect I know the reason. In NY you can hunt coyotes "Statewide except Long Island and New York City: Oct. 1 – Mar. 30 There are no bag limits for coyotes. They may be hunted during the day or night". I remember when I was young there was a bounty, but I don't believe that is the case any longer.

Up here

Yep, I would take a hardwood walking stick over a knife any day. How would you employ a knife without being bitten?
