Anyone know of a good manual can opener that will last more than a few months? We've gone through probably 4 or 5 in the last year.

We have two. The one I like is the type that cuts the entire top off the can. That leaves a top with no sharpe edges to get cut on.

We use this one. It is a side cutter and ours has lasted several years, no problems. This was from Amazon.

You must really open a lot of cans. I'll be 40 soon and have never replaced one, and I think my parents still have the one that was old when I was born.

New can openers are cheaply made. I have not found a good new opener.

Neighborhood women had a "Pampered Chef" party to benefit young neighbor mom with breast cancer..

Sweetie bought a can opener that cuts from the side of the rim.. It leaves a smooth lid and can lip.. Works well...

I was suspicious of how it would last, but it has done well..

We also have several thrift store quality hand can openers in the "in case needed" box of stuff.. These being name brand implements that hopefully will last..

The one I have must be about 10 years old and still works fine, it’s from Walmart and has no brand name on it, it was one of the more expensive ones they had.

"Swing-A-Way" used to be a good can opener, but in the past 2 decades I have had poor results with a Swing-A-Way dated "3" and a "Kuhn Rikon" (Swiss side cutting). My go-to now is an "Ideal" brand "Suten Gangy" that is a P-38 on steroids (About 5" x 3" x 1" with a cap lifter as well). Found it as

Swing Away is the brand you're looking for. Went with the astronaughts to space. .nice grocery stores have them. Very well made and about a dollar more than the one beside it.

I have one which has worked perfectly for nearing 30 years - Victorinox, on my Swiss Army Knife. If I'm in the kitchen, and have to open a can, I'll walk to get my Swiss Army knife for the can opener, rather than use that wretched thing my wife put in the kitchen drawer!

Start going to estate garage sales and look for one made 50+ years ago.

That is what we've found and the reason for my post.

We've had problems with all the brands being mentioned. They just don't last for more than a few months before they are essentially worn out. Looks to me that all the new ones are made of soft metal to save money.

What's your frequency on using a can opener? It must be 50 times what mine is.

Which parts wears on you? Cutter wheel or drive wheel? Or is the grip weak due to bending?

I've been using the can opener on my Swiss Army knife for almost 20 years. Very reliable but a bit slow.

The newer ones aren't made very well but I discovered that holding the opener at slightly different angles to the can gives much better results. Every opener is different.

When my wife laughed at my using my Swiss Army knife to open a can in the kitchen (suggesing it was for camping only), I challenged her to a race opening a can. She used her hand crank opener, which slipped and required a restart twice. I won.

I've had good luck with the OXO brand holding up, but I don't open a truck load of cans a month either.
