Knotbored, That is also an option. I'm just wondering if it will spit the poop all over.

I kept wondering when this possibility would come up.

I keep thinking that there isn't any inexpensive way to do this.

I wonder if its even necessary to "break up" the hard "stuff".
You mentioned a compost heap, and anything vegetable put in there will break down into mulch, wet will decompose quicker, but the dry "stuff" will absorb all the moisture too.
Break up any big piles into concrete block size with a (borrowed) front end loader, and just don't let it build up for months next time.
By the way, I have put all sorts of manures into my garden, both green and composted. The horse manure does bring up more weeds, but even the composted area did also-hoeing three weeds per chunk of soil takes no longer then hoeing one weed per chunk of soil.

I'm thinking of composting hay from two round bale feeders with manure from the barnyard. To speed up the decomposition, I'll add some dry molasses to encourage the bio-bugs to come for lunch.
