Massey 1758 Hyro Transmission Oil Issues

Stormcon,
Yes that helps a bunch. The 1000 designation would identify this oil as not synthetic at all.
It seems I need the Synthetic All Weather designation if I want the full synthetic version, which is what I believe you are recommending. Do I have this right?
Thanks much for sharing this info!!

Scott, end of long hot summer. Well maybe still seriously hot where you are.
How's the hydro running? Have you run it hard in hot weather for longer periods? Drew

Has not missed a lick. Cut at literally 105 to 108 and had absolutely no issues. The oil did not thin out as I expected and a side note, it seemed the a/c blew a little cooler (may have just been me). It is incredible just what the difference is. I talked to my Massey dealer where I had been taking the tractor for the factory to look at. Massey has switched to a semi syn. oil instead of dino oil. My hope is to have someone from Agco chime in and talk about why so many people have fixed oil issues by changing to a full synthetic oil and if Agco has plans to make a full synthetic. I will be doing another oil sample in about a month and will be happy to share the results.

Trans is still doing great. A little whining on loader. Oil has made all the difference.

Wonderful to hear of your results.
I had joined this thread last fall, and since found out that another nearby Massey dealer carried the Permatran III oil and it is now semi synthetic. I changed to it at 100 hours and am fully satisfied with its performance.
But, the original dealer changed the trans oil at 50 hours and installed some conventional oil, Farmoyl brand. That oil also worked perfectly.

When changing from the Massey dino oil to full synthetic did you guys just drain the old oil (plus change filters) and refill with the Chevron syn or did you flush the system before adding the Chevron syn? If you flushed, how did you do it?

Just changed it. Let it drain for 3 hours, made sure filters were out, ran some air thru it and went for it. The cup that may be left, I will grab in the next change. I will short hour this change and run an oil sample at 50 hours and change it if necessary.

Thanks Scott,

My tractor has been sitting overnight with the filters out and I will finish up this morning. I guess there will always be some oil left in the system, since the loader cylinders and some of the piping wont drain.

When draining the hydro oil I didn't see anything unusual and the oil seemed to be quite thick, even after running the tractor for several hrs and the heat showing 3 bars. The oil didn't smell weird either but when I pulled the pleated filter there was a burnt smell and it was not coming from the oil. It appeared to be coming from the Transmission case. Does that make sense? Is there something in there that could cause that. I would think the smell would be carried into the oil too. I've got to see if there is some place close by that will test the oil and take a sample in, after say another 50 hrs. If I recall correctly, that intake filter connects to the hydraulic pump. If that is the case then maybe the smell is coming from the pump. I'm going to check the parts diagrams to see if there is something there that would help.

Take a sample and have it tested. We get it done for 25.00 U.S.
Cheap money and it will tell you what you are dealing with. I would test both engine and trans.

I just checked and there is a testing lab in the City close to us. So the question is ..... what do the results show? Is it just a bunch of chemical analysis with results, or do they state in plain English if something is wrong and the possible cause/s?
