First hand experience here from when I was younger and stupider (not insinuating that you are of course). It will blow up in your face!!! Static from the bag can set it off. My friend and I that were doing this both have poor hearing from this incident and fortunately only got slightly burnt from hot plastic.

Regatta starting blanks. Why didn't I think of that. Maybe this goes to show I was never close enough to the committee boat at the start to see what made the noise! Actually at San Diego Yacht Club (once proud holder of the "America's Cup" (Thanks Denny, AKA Dennis Conner) I saw a lot of 12 gauge blanks fired from a sholder weapon but suspect they may have had a starter's cannon too. They certainly had a neat model "Noon Cannon."

I don't have a 10 gauge but I guess that is an alternative, thanks for the reminder.

Patrick (RPM) I am quite familiar with the sound of the incoming supersonic round, especially .30 cal. Please do not misunderstand, I have no intention of ever shooting near someone so they get to hear the crack of the supersonic round. I want to maximize the muzzle blast with a legal gun. Was curious what would do that. I think the respondent mentioning the .50 BMG was warming to the topic. Maybe I can make some super duper blanks for my 3 inch magnum 12 gauge.

Re Swift or .17, I have a 22-250 that shoots pretty flat/fast with hot handloads (not a slouch with factory ammo) It isn't exactly a stealth round but is way below what I want in muzzle blast/concussion.

The loudest gun you can buy is a .50BMG, the big fifty cal Browning. Plain, and simple.

They are available in single shot bolt action. You can find full blown Browning M2 machineguns modified for semi-auto. Barret also makes a nice semi-auto.

However, it is $$$$$. A .50bmg bolt action can be found for the $1500-200 range. A Barrett Light is $5k+ A converted Brwoning is $8k+

Short of that, a .338, or 375H&H is pretty loud...

OK, OK, Enough already I want an obnoxiously noisy legal device, preferably a gun sorta thingy not obnoxious music. I have read plenty on psi-war and don't need any suggestions along those lines but this is not about that or "the neighbor from hell" contrary to Bird et al, this is another topic. OK??????

The muzzle blast from .50bmg will clear three to five benches to either side at the range... It will blow a persons hat off, if they are standing within 20 feet of the side of the rifle. In a rnage situation, it is impossible for anyone within 25-30 feet to even hope of firing thier rifle/pistol accurately. At 300 yards, it will knock a bowling pin 30' in the air.

The only thing I have heard that was louder, they used to get cannons out once a year at a demonstration near our old house. WOW!
