Maxtor One-Touch II, are they worth the investment

Glad you got the drive working. Nothing like knowing your backed up!

Not sure how you feel about sharing drives, but, you should be able to back up your other computers over the network as mentioned in the previous post as the retrospect software just copies data to a drive/backup set. I have not tested this, but, I do not see why you could not install the SW on each of your PC’s then share out the Maxtor II drive(s) from the local PC where the Maxtor is attached. This way you could then backup to a mapped drive using retrospect that would go to the external Maxtor II.

Just a thought and my 4 cents - typically 2 cents but it's past my bedtime and I am now on overtime. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Eddie we just tried your recommendation and the Maxtor still won't recognize the other drives on the network. Sure that we could move the Maxtor from desktop to desktop but we were trying to eliminate that.

As another note on the firewire, my stuff is all firewire because my PC has USB 1.1 ports and firewire from the factory. The video camera is DV (just is 4 pin firewire no power leads) and my external burner for the PC is firewire.

I recently bought a Mac with both USB 2.0 and firewire, but the firewire is still handy as I can chain the Maxtor and the CD burner and the video camera all together without a hub of any type. This is the same for PC and Mac.

Also, two firewire equiped machines can plug into each other with any firewire cable and make a really fast network for moving files. I use this for working big stuff back and forth between my PC and Mac.

So yes firewire is slowing down as the USB 2.0 standard is cheaper, but video stuff and high end audio gear has always been firewire/ieee 1394/sony i-link/DV.

Sorry if I led you on a wild goose chase there. Was hoping to save you from having to move that drive around. Still don't understand why it does not work, but, you seem to know what you're doing.

Of course the other option is to buy external drives for the other computers.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif My wife says I am good at spending money, guess that includes other people's as well.

Eddie I'm with you and still think it can be done. There has to be a trick to it just haven't found the right solution yet. Anybody else with a suggestion, I'm all ears.

Just a Note - I couldn't get the retospect software to work, I was using the version that came with the drive. It seemed to be one of those - here's a free be, the full version for only $$$ will do more - type versions. After looking at the maxtor and retospect site, I desided to go with Norton Ghost for backing up.

Pine Ridge, did not read the whole thread, but we use the Seagate version of this in our offices with great success. I dont use Maxtor drives, prefer Seagate. Each of these has a one touch system, but it is more than that.

Yes you can setup the software to backup over the network, just share the folders or map a drive from the server to the folder and backup the mapped letter. This will be faster if you have a USB 2.0 on your computer or you can add a USB 2.0 card to the computer. 2.0 is a must for this.

You can get the Seagates for under 300.00 each for 300 gig of data storage............a bargain

I would think you can backup any drive that the software can see. The main thing about it I have it set to make a full restore copy once a month and 'change' additions if anything is updated. Another nice thing about it is you can go into the save copies and get files back from those copies.
If I could have gotten the other software to work correctly, I most likly would be using it. But I also needed to update my virus subscription, so I got the System Works that included the Ghost app.

Well, looks like I need to get the backup installed now. My hd crashed this week. I was in the process of getting to review my options before I began the price shopping process. Anyway, I procrastinated too long!

Mike, does the Maxtor work for you as expected? I was told that an external hd backup is preferred since it has a separate power supply and won't cause loss of data in the event of a power failure. I am reviewing Maxtor and Seagate options available to me locally.
