That is what I thought about the speed with the larger tires. Basic physics tells you that it should be faster, maybe its a false sensation from the tires. I am going to check it with the truck speedometer.
My windshield wiper will not go vertical, what you see is what you get. I got one of the first RTV's put out and I think they have redesigned it or went with a different model wiper. It bothered me at first but I have grown used to it and don't even see it anymore.

Nice "meat hooks"! I looked closely at those tires, but I had a friend who had them on a Rhino who talked me out of them since most of the time my RTV will be tooling around my yard. He promises me that he gets better traction in the mud and snow than I will with the Maxxis Bighorns. That I have no problem believing! However, I wanted to run them year round and didn't want my lawn dug up. I guess since mine are not as aggressive could be why they feel no different in the handling scene on hard surfaces.

Great looking rubber though. If I had an opportunity to go on true off roading trips more often I'd have gone with those tires. At least this way we will get reports on how several different tires perform on the RTV. Heck, you may never need your winch now! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I drove a friends Rhino around his yard and with the stock tires, it will tear up the grass in a turn because of the locked rear end. Is the RTV rear locked all the time or does it have a differential lock like the tractor, if it's not locked all the time it shouldn't tear up the grass in a turn, unless you go really fast and slide. Gotta drive one of the RTV's, just for comparison mind you, my wife says I can't afford one. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

The RTV has a locking differential like a tractor, you step on a pedal to lock it in. I have been driving across the lawn with no damage, but if you get into a soft area it will leave tracks. The 589's are a low pressure, high floatation tire that seems to float on mud rather than plow through.
You need to test drive an RTV or any RUV, as I heard that it grows hair on your head and drives the ladies wild /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. If you need a work horse that is a blast to drive, this is it. Tell your bride that it will help with her flower garden /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

You're going to love the 589's in the snow. I run them on my quad during the winter (pic attached) and what a difference.

Question - looking at the front of your RTV, below the receiver is a plate with 3 grooves. What is it?

It is the quick attach mount for the 60" snow plow. The plow frame slides into the attached receiver and you throw two levers. plug in the blade lift and go.
That is a cool looking quad you have, nice looking tires /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Got it. Sounds like a good plow setup.
Doubt I'll plow with mine. The quad pictured has a plow but I mainly use the tractor with a 6' blade off the 3-point. The FEL comes in handy to push it away also.

I just split another load of firewood and loaded my RTV. I can tell you now that 14 psi is too low for the rear with a load. They were sagging pretty bad. I put them back up to 17.5 psi and that seemed to be a good compromise. Dozernut, have you put any weight in yours with only 7 psi? I would watch it closely. If I only had 7 psi in mine with a full load of firewood, I would have been on the rims. I think 14 psi is okay for the front, but I'm staying at 17.5 minimum in the rear. I really wouldn't want to bend up one of my new rims! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif When I was comparing tires, I noticed that the 589's and the Maxxix both were 6 ply.

No. I have not put a load on them yet. I would pump them up for a heavy load. I am also leery of that low psi with weight on them, but for running the muddy trails, that pressure is good.

You guys are on 2 different pages. The Bighorns are a radial that naturally needs more pressure than a bias ply. The 589's are bias. Therefore, 7 psi should be adequate for the rated load of the tire on most bias atv tires. I don't know specifically, but I'd bet the bighorns need a certain higher pressure at all times to perform like they are supposed to.

I'd also figure if you run the radials at low pressure for an extended period of time, they will fail (like a truck tire), wearing out the sidewall rapidly.

I'm no tire expert, I just have had a lot of experience with atv tires.

One thing is for sure, be VERY careful when over-inflating bias atv tires. I know a guy who worked in a tire shop, and one day he put some new blackwaters on for a guy. While he was airing one up, he rested his hand on the tire. He was putting 35 lbs in the tires (he didn't know better). The bead blew off the rim, with such force that it broke a bunch of bones in his hand. Needless to say he was lucky, it could have been worse.

Sorry for such a long post, just wanted to reveal the dangers of over-inflation.

Thanks for the info, I will keep my 589's at 7 psi as they recommend. It is obvious that I do not have a lot of experience with low pressure tires and I appreciate your input. The 589's sure have exceeded my expectations.

DieselMule, I do not doubt you at all with your ATV tire experience. I have a '62 Chevy show car. For some shows I run the old original OEM bias ply tires on the car. They certainly are not the best handling tire, but they worked just fine for decades. I can tell you from experience though that no bias ply tire likes 600 hp. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

There is no doubt that different style tires require different pressures. I have a tire changing machine and balancer in my barn. I've changed hundreds of tires. I've had a dry rotted ATV tire (off of my '89 Honda Pilot) explode on me when trying to seat the rim. It didn't hurt me, (to big and stupid?) but it did fill my barn with black dust. I've also spent hours cleaning my changer after changing a tire that has been filled with Slime. It seems like I'm always changing tires on my Odysseys. I've noticed that all the ATV tires I've changed are much softer than car, truck or tractor tires. The big rear tires on my tractor put a strain on both me and my machine to change!

My point is, yes, there definitely is a difference in tires. The only consistant is that if you allow a bump to mash the tire against the rim, you get a bent rim and a cut tire. Having the right pressure for the right tire based upon the vehicle weight is imperative. A certain pressure in a tire for a 500 pound ATV just may not work for an 1800 pound RTV. The RTV was not invented when the Bighorns or the 589's began production. I doubt that there is a "recommended" pressure for our specific application yet. I'd be willing to bet that some ATV tires will end up not being acceptable on the RTV because of the weight issue.

I think it is great that there are at least 5 different tires being run by RTV owners who are on this board. Listening to feedback from these owners will be one way to find out what tire works best. By no means am I trying to tell Dozernut what pressure to run in his tires. I was just relaying what I experienced with my tires and alerting him to watch his tires when he puts a load in his RTV. He knows me, he's been to my house, and I don't think he believes I'm trying to tell him what to do. Not my style. I have no idea if the Bighorns I bought will work well on the RTV. They seem to be great so far, but only time will tell. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

When I bought my RTV Worksite last weekend, I told my dealer I wanted the ATV tires from the Recreation model rather than the stock Worksite tires. He accomodated my request for no charge. If not for this site, I would not have known to even think about possible disadvantages of the stock Worksite tires. So far, the ATV tires from the Recreation model seem to be very good.

I was in no way implying anything whatsoever, I just wanted to stress the danger of it to everyone.

I totally agree with you about some tires not being suitable for the heavier machines. I called around for prices on some 27" Maxxis Mudzillas, mounted on ITP type 5 rims. One guy told me that he wouldn't sell them to me for a Rhino because when loaded it weighed more than the load limit of the tires! So that means it would be WAY worse on a RTV (weighs more, and has a bigger payload).

Personally, I would think a 6 ply tire would be better than the stock 2? ply.

Anyway, I got them bought for $683. That counts 4 16oz bottles of slime too, shipped to my door. Best deal I could find on these badazz tires and rims.
