Egon had the province right and the way I heard the story the student was the one who had seen the wolves previously.

I have never read of coyotes killing a person until I read this story. The place we lived three years ago was over run with coyotes. Development was crowding them towards us. Every cat and small dog in the neighborhood was eaten. Snatched out of the yard many times while the pet owner was watching.
Was that in Ohio too?
That's why I'm keeping my cat either indoors or on a leash. It kinda feels weird having a cat on a leash, but the two main threats here are coyotes and eagles.
Our cat moved into the house during the winter noreaster of 1994 and never moved back out.

I'm with you...All hikers should be armed and use deadly force..Give me a break ! what is more important ---some scraggly ole Coyote , bear etc. or a human being...no contest and laws that prevent folks from potecting their lives are laws that should be broken and let a jury decide. Just my opinion.
Well said.

This was in Middletown, Ohio. We lived about 1/4 mile from I-75. Every night we would hear as many as a dozen coyotes howling within 25 yards of the house. They were always outside the fringe. In the weeds and brush where you couldn't see them. I have lived in the country all of my life and nothing scares me. Hearing a dozen coyotes howling and yelping 25 yards from your back porch will make your hair stand on end! I don't like them. I have read a lot about them and none of it was good.

Sad, sad story.

The irony of this is that the Gov't brought the coyotes into the province in the 1920's to kill off an over-population of rabbits.

There is a sense that they have bred with dogs and have become larger and more aggressive over the years. Western coyotes tend to be smaller and more timid.

We have had sittings of them locally - around my farm and of course the odd dead one on the highway. My brother was stalked by a few several years ago while walking along an old railway cut. He was out fishing for the day and said it was one of the most eeriest feelings.

There are now members of gov't calling for a total removal of the animal from the province - they did have a bounty on the animal as well.

Still a sad tragic ordeal...

We raised our cat like a dog. He was raised with a dog. He thought he was a dog. He walked on a leash just fine. Got some weird looks in the vet office when we'd take him in walking on a leash. Dogs would bark at him and he'd take a swing at them. :)

That'd be funny!:D Mine is walking om her leash OK, but she has stubborn streaks where I just have to go the way SHE wants to go. I guess that's a little like some dogs too! :)

In today's paper they were quoting a farmer somewhere in the area who said he used to just fire warning shots when he saw coyotes in his yard, just to scare them off, but now >>>>> no mercy, he's shooting to kill any coyote that crosses his path.

I don't know, but I think they are intelligent enough that when they figure out that going around humans gets them killed, the coyotes will shy away from humans again.

We didn't have them in Middle Tennessee when I grew up, and then the govt. reintroduced them here. I hear them howling in the woods, but the thought had already crossed my mind some time ago that I don't want my child out in the woods alone with them.

The govt. was also responsible for planting kudzu here in the 30's. Would like to return it to them.

We have coyotes here in and around South Bend, Indiana. However, there have been few reports of problems with them.... except a few weeks ago a neighborhood was reporting brazen coyotes coming up to their doors, going from yard to yard, etc.... so they hired a licensed animal control agent to trap coyotes in the neighborhood. Then some underground pro wildlife group got involved and threatened to damage the agent's equipment, harass him, etc.... and the agent backed out. The local animal control stepped in and trapped the marauding beast. It was a cute little dog. An actual DOG... as in house pet dog.

Cute happy friendly little feller. I think he's up for adoption now. Some people are clueless about wildlife in their own backyard. I don't know how many times I've heard raccoons fighting in the woods at night only to hear someone I am with say "Oooo, coyotes!"

You bring up a good point Moss. Dogs are at the root of many "coyote" problems in my experience.
In the last village I lived in, a transplant form the city set anti freeze out to get the coyote that was tearing up his garbage. He poisoned the neighbor's dog.

And isn't THAT an eerie sound!

Yeh, it'll scare the bajeebers out of you... especially if they decide to fight right next to your deck during a party with a bunch of people that have been consuming beverages.:eek::eek: :D
