You bring up a good point Moss. Dogs are at the root of many "coyote" problems in my experience.
In the last village I lived in, a transplant form the city set anti freeze out to get the coyote that was tearing up his garbage. He poisoned the neighbor's dog.

When I was a kid we had a neighbor that called all the other neighbors to tell us we shouldn't put out food in our yards for the wildlife.... because it was making their dog fat! Unfortunately, our other neighbor poisoned the dog. It died a horrible death on their front lawn and a bunch of neighbor kids saw it suffering. :(

As for the coyotes, the few I have seen here I could not get closer than a 1/4 mile to in open fields. If they see people, they take off. Again, however, we were at a friend's house on the south side of town. He has horses, chickens, goats, etc... he said the coyotes will come right up to the fence and stare at the chickens even when the people are out. Only 50-60 feet away. So, I guess they can be bold.

I have hunted coyotes quit a bit, and they are very smart and well equipped predators. They are fast, have great endurance, great sense of smell, great hearing and eye sight. They pretty much have it all. I also think they understand humans when they are around them. The only realiable way to hunt them is with a large group of 4 wheelers and/or trucks and drive them out in the open and shoot them. The only reason there are not more people killed by them is that they don't hunt in organized packs like wolves. I'm a big guy, and let me tell you, I would be afraid of a pair of coyotes attacking me, let alone a small women. I once saw a large rotweiller and coyote tangle, the coyote kicked the dogs butt, and this was after the coyote had been run ragged for about 3 miles and shot once.

I use to like hearing them and seeing them. But their numbers have increased to the point that they are no longer welcome, more so with the girls playing outside. Only one lady I know has been threatened by them, nipped on the heel while in her drive way. When they came yipping close around the spread I told the oldest to sting them with a BB. But the time has come to to plant them. I'm older then any of them, I was here first! They are not welcome to eat my children or animals. I still like the raccoons but try to resist feeding them. All rodents, and predators are nuisanea non grata.

There was a update on this attack tonight. Apparently the one Coyote that was caught and killed, WASN'T diseased.

The second is still on the run, but being tracked.

This changes things a bit. Why did these coyotes attack?

We have only ever had livestock killed once and it was a domestic dog running loose. Man was I angry. The thought of Coy-dogs is very troubling for sure.

And not only was it not diseased, it wasn't hungry - apparently it had been eating well prior to this incident.

Does anyone have a link to the report details? Around here all coyotes would be shot on sight but that doesn't help much if the animals that attacked are not seen.
I'm just wondering who declared that they got the right one and how they came to that conclusion.
