Thanks, the link I copied didn't work.

You're welcome. It's strange how sometimes the links I put up are clickable and sometimes they aren't.
Did you see my question about the sludge?

Arc Weld,
I think the sludge you mentioned is what my grandfather said they used for white wash. Is it white and is it toxic? I think the generator was on the first floor of the tank house that held the drinking water.

The white sludge is basically calcium hydroxide or commonly known as "slacked lime" All the other impurities wind up in that sludge also. Is this chemistry 101?

We used to have acetylene (carbide) headlamps for caving. All the serious cavers used them and packed the sludge out with them. Only rookie cavers l used electric flashlights.

They said the sludge is difficult to dispose off and you can't just haul it off to the land fill.

Ron,
I never even had Chemistry 101 and if I had I'd probably have forgotten all of it by now.

Thanks. It sounds toxic. My grandfather lived to be 89 but, I don't think he was the one who applied it for white wash.

I just remember seeing acetylene (carbide generator) on the first automobiles made. Any body seen other uses?
Ron

Ron,
It'll be highly unusual if this link works. It's supposed to lead to a carbide machne gun and come to think of it I've seen carbide cannon "noise makers" advertised in magazines.
