Can anyone comment on the differences? Do u have to clutch either one to change direction?

The mechanical shuttle require the clutch to be engaged to change direction. The hydraulic shuttle doesn't require the clutch to change direction.

We had a Case CX80 with synchronized hydraulic shuttle and you had to use the foot clutch to go from forward to reverse. We traded it in this year for a Kubota M8540 with hydraulic shuttle with which you don't have to use the foot clutch. The hydraulic shuttle selector engages the clutch automatically when you move the lever half way through the arc.

We love the utility of the hydraulic shuttle especially when doing loader work.

I was under the impression you didnt have to clutch on either model just that engagement was quicker and smoother on the hydraulic version

Nope, we have mechanical on our back hoe and had it on our Case and you had to use the clutch to change directions.

Mechanical shuttle (non-synchronized) - You have a separate shift lever for forward-reverse shuttling. Requires use of foot clutch and must be motionless when shifting between fwd-rev. Single plate dry clutch;

Synchro-shuttle (synchronized) - You have a separate shift lever for forward-reverse shuttling. Requires use of foot clutch but do not have to be completely stopped when shifting between fwd-rev; Single plate dry clutch;

Hydraulic shuttle (power reverser) - You have a separate shift lever (usually a turn signal-like stalk) for forward-reverse shuttling. Does not require use of foot clutch since clutch is electro-hydraulically engaged with shift lever. Comes hand-in-hand with more durable multi-plate wet clutch.
