I think you just need to be lucky. I have a 100+ year old Bull Dog that I got for $2 at a garage sale. I'm not a garage sale guy but saw it as as I was driving by and stopped. Looking at how well it's made I'm guessing it'll be around long after I have passed away (unless someone throws it out).
I have had a couple of the Chinese specials. One of them had plastic body filler on it to make it look smooth. One day I was beating on some metal to shape it and was surprised when filler went flying across the room. Eventually the lead screw stretched and it no longer worked.
Unless you can come across a garage sale or Craig's list deal you get what you pay for.
