Memorable Movie Mumblings

It amazes me how younger people, like my lady friend have no interest in older movies. It's got to be just a mindset. If a movie was good then, why isn't it good now?

A couple from The Cheyenne Social Club with Jimmy Stewart. The whole film was a gas!!!

John O'Hanlan:
I never knew you were married.

Harley Sullivan:
Well, John, it ain't something I like to talk about, but I was married once. And once is enough for any man. You can't smoke, chew, dip, drink, scratch in the parlor, or cuss. When you leave the house, they ask you where'd you go. And when you come home, they ask you where have you been. And right now with you, it is just like when I was married.

--------------------

John O'Hanlan:
Well, how much money does he need to get her liver fixed?

Jenny:
Five hundred dollars.

John O'Hanlan:
Five hundred dollars for a liver?

Jenny:
That's what the big doctor in Chicago charges. And he's got all kinds of fancy letters in back of his name.

John O'Hanlan:
I don't care what's in back of his name! Five hundred dollars - that's more than you have to pay for a good horse!

---------------------------------------

Harley Sullivan:
I've never know it before, John, but a good gunfight sure makes a man hungry.

----------------------

John O'Hanlan:
I suppose you've come to see me about that little thing last night.

Marshal Anderson:
That wasn't any little thing you did, O'Hanlan. That was a Bannister you shot. I've been wanting to do it for years.

John O'Hanlan:
Well, how much time do I have?

Marshal Anderson:
Oh, three days at the most. They live quite a ways out of town. But trouble rides a fast horse!

They were better then because they were more real. The stunts were done by professionals and rarely had to be done twice. The suspense and atmosphere was done in the script. Now it's all computerized and graphic images.

They even made films about stuntmen doing stunts, like 'Hooper'.

Show me a movie today that's as good as something like "The French Connection".

And remakes really annoy me.

Keep this in mind. These old movies were made at a time when (a) the country was mostly rural; (b) radio, news papers and newsreels were the main source of contact with what was going on in the world; and (c) the actors were primarily classically trained for the stage, and were just moving into the movies and later TV. Vaudeville was dying, and the excellent actors had no where else to go. Movies were a big deal; not uncommon for the whole family to attend. I know my family did, in the late 40's and 50's, before TV or when TV was in its infancy. Life was primarily hard work, school, and listening to The Lone Ranger once a week on the radio.

Oh, I might add, the melodrama of the stage and silent movies was pretty evident in the sound movies, at least it seems to me.

Because they often cannot relate it to their current lives and past experiences.

How many of us traveled the world with Bob and Bing in 'The Road To ... ' series of films?

I like The French Connection and Casablanca but they have little to do with my lifes experiences.

Good films are a rarity now and they were a rarity before. French Connection came out in 1971, I'm sure that year saw a whole bunch of bs movies geared for the lowest common denominator.
