Mid 90's Home Depot started to appear in this area. Menards took the threat seriously and really upped their game. They were pretty crappy before, but they expanded stores, started stocking better quality stuff and improved service. Overall they are significantly better than HD around here.

The only mistake they made was moving the building materials order counter from the front to the back. It really p's off the contractors who now have to waste time walking to the back of the store vs the quick in and out they could do before. The counter guys say they hear about it all the time, but still no change on that issue from corporate. I assume it is like how milk and eggs are in the back of the grocery store to get you to walk all the way through and buy more stuff. But that's not really a contractor on a mission during a job...

The other nice thing is being able to purchase online and go straight to the gate to load. Once in the yard if you forget something you can jump on the app, purchase online, and show the ticket when leaving at the gate. No need to ever go inside if you don't want to.

Only if you've ordered and paid, online. Otherwise, you still have to pay up front, right? I order big stuff online, to pick up back there. Handy.

As far as I know, contractors can go straight to the back since you need the invoice to get back out. Not sure what kind of relationship is needed with the store.

I personally like self checkout, so that would be a strike against them in my book. Not that it matters, nearest one is 1000 mi or so away...

So, you go to the lumber yard, pick out what you want, stack it on a cart then go figure out how to pay for it. And that's a good thing? What's next, you show up on Tuesdays to help unload the truck, put the merchandise on the shelves ? After that you get a credit for x trips to the store to pick out, load and pay for your merchandise?

I have no issues with self-service. I can scan items and put my CC in the reader just as easily as some minimum wage clerk can do.
What's the difference between self-checkout and pumping your own gas? Or maybe you don't do that either.

Not sure how you made the jump to stocking shelves.

I'm the opposite. I like customer service, and talking to a real person. Plus I've never been to a self checkout that gives me a discount for my labor as temporary cashier

Menards looks like a central states company. Definitely not any out west.
