Metal Bldg/Pole barn

jgh, one suggestion I have, we built our barn 50x 100 and use a stack wagon also. At 50 feet wide we always have about 6 feet of empty space that you can not get another stack in the barn. So by the time you get 8 rows stacked out of the barn you have alot of wasted space. Build your barn so that it fits the right size of the stack wagon and not have alot of wasted space. If you have to make it not as wide but a little longer you will have more capacity in your barn. And you can get away with a litlle over 16' tall on the height.

Thanks for all the comments and advice. Eddie, based on your taking on that "nightmare" engine rebuild work, how about coming out here to build this bldg for me ;)? You keep at it for sure!

The big farmers around here all use basic pole bldgs, some of which I have checked out. These things are built with telephone poles, engineered trusses and otherwise pretty downhome run of the mill construction. Our locality does not require a bldg permit for farm bldgs, scary in a way.

Hate to do this to you, metal fans, but in the interests of cost I am leaning toward pole. Its cheap and I can cut my costs by helping with my equipment to set the poles, etc. Thinking of accelerating my buy-a-lift project so I can have one to do this with.

I am proceeding to request a few quotations from metal mfrs just to have a yardstick of comparison. Keep the advice coming and thanks!

Hey, FL4400, thanks for the tips on size. Another local hay person recommended I diagram things on graph paper to avoid that problem. Also, the specs on most of the selfpropelled NH stack wagons say 18 ft is needed, although I may start with a pull type which needs less height. Which one do you use?

Look at National Barn , I have been rading good things about them and they seem very reasonable to hire to install as well.

Don't want to hyjack this thread but I am taking delivery of one of their barns this saturday and it will be put up next week. 30x50x10 insulated for 12,120.00 They have been very profesional so far. This is my first post here but I have been getting a lot of good information. I will let yall know how it went.

Been away for a while from here, sorry. Trying to make progress on getting up the barn, so I went looking for local examples.

Here is a completed job I viewed recently, your basic very large & tall pole barn. Note the clear center span and sheds on sides. He has 2 NH 1089 Bale stack wagons, with the ceiling ht to match. Envy x 2!!

In talking to the builder of that one, we came up with a 55 ft width instead of my 50, since by his experience with stack wagons, the extra 5 would work out just about right. I wasn't looking forward to using graph paper again, anyway.

And I'd love to see pics of Junkman104's project.

Hey Guy! Who is the builder, as I'm looking for a western end of Goochland barn/shed as well (within a year or so). It will be within a mile or so of George's Tavern off Rt 6. BobG in VA
