Metal building with no gutters?

Don't know if this will help you. I put a metal roof on my house and I do not want gutters. If I had them I would just need to take them off in the winter or the snow would rip them off anyway. Too much of a PITA. I have put a border of stone completely around my house that is wide enough to catch the water coming off the roof. The stone keeps the water coming off the roof from digging a trench. The stone is about 2 feet deep and there is a french drain and the drain runs all of the water away from the house to a location that allows the water to run away from the house.

^^that sounds like what I want to do. How long have you had it? How does it work for you? Any lessons to pass along?

How do you handle the water coming off of the roof(s)?

I haven't worried about it for 30 years. Everything is still fine. All 8 of the chicken houses and two 150' litter barns are fine too. My brothers shop is 80 x 80 and 26 ft high in center and has no gutters and it's fine.

I have had them about 10 years . . . work well and are guaranteed to not plug up, so far so good and we get a lot of rain in the PNW . . . I believe they run specials from time to time.

We are finalizing the details on our shop building. It will be 14' at the shoulder and cleaning gutters as we get older will be difficult to say the least.

I am considering extending the roof a foot or so beyond the walls and using a ground drain to channel the water away from the foundation.

Has anyone done anything like this? Any other recommendations for a decent alternative? Things to consider?

We get about 48 inches of rain a 2 inches of snow a year. Monthly rainfall goes from about 2.5 inches to about 6 inches.
Should work. Didn't have gutters nor downspouts in Baton Rouge area. I foolishly did an extension to our porch and put a gutter and downspout on it. Stuff kept growing up the downspout and stopping it up.

“Figure your drainage and any exposure to standing water carefully.”

I personally do not like gutters or downspout. If you can raise your slab/building enough for really positive drainage, and extend your overhangs enough, I would go that route along with some additional in ground drainage. Big overhangs and positive slope go along way!!
From the $$ standpoint and long term maintenance that is my preference. My secound choice in your situation where gutter cleaning is inconvenient due to hight, here's what I did.
(A) Keep overhang short so that runoff fall's near wall. (B) Instead of mounting gutter at 14',mount it at a hiegth that's easy to reach with water hose wand or step ladder. Use blocks of treated lumber at each gutter bracket to position gutter to catch water. Paint gutter, downspouts and blocks exact color of building.
To manage water after reaching ground level,I helped my bil set up an above ground pool he got free off CraigsList. It's shocking how many gallons even the smallest pool stores when compared to # of 55 gal barrels and 275 gal totes required to store an equal amount. In his case, his vegitable garden, part of landscaping and a livestock watering tank is lower than ground where pool sits near building. We buried 1/2" pvc running to hydrants which gravity flow. I leave it to you watering plants with public water and compare to others watered with rainwater. Same is true of livestock. Unless starved, livestock will stand next to a bucket of public water waiting for empty trough to be filled with rainwater. Composters are aware of benifits of rainwater over public supply. The set up worked as planed but after 2 years,he saw room for improvement. Mosquitoes raised in pool,in rainy season when less water was used, pool overflowed making ground wet and soggy plus he tired of explaining why his swimming pool was in such an odd place. Back to CraigsList for free retaining wall/landscape blocks, flagstone, gravel and river boulders to create a natural look pond (inside and outside). Various native minnows, fish, frogs, mussuls and water bugs keep it clean, control mosquitoes and intertain. To minimize overflow,a buried 2" pipe discharges several yards away downhill. During shoulder seasons, skimmer ties into drain pipe. Dureing wet as well as dry periods,a manifold of pvc pipes and ball valves are adjusted for desired storage level.

I put in the stone and the drain about 8 years ago. It works good for me as far as I can tell. When it rains the water runs out of the drain well so I assume it is still working. I dug the trench for the stone myself by hand with a pickax and shovel.

The biggest thing that you need to be aware of is the level of the drain and that you need to have a slight grade so that the water will run out. The drain drain side of the house the pipe is 24 inches down and it is 6 inches higher on the far side of the house. A 6 inch drop over about 80 feet is more than enough. So you need a way to measure the level of the bottom of the trench. I'm sure there are more sophisticated ways to do this but I used a simple water level out of a 50 foot length of clear tubing.

None of my outbuildings have gutters. But - we average 14 inches of rain a year. Been this way for forty years. Nothing has rotted out yet. Nor does anything show signs of rotting.

A decent energy heel on your trusses will allow you to extend your overhang and still tie the soffit back to sidewall above windows and not block your view.
