I have an old barn. It is not in bad shape but it is slowly deteriorating; especially the sides near the ground.

Has anyone ever taken metal sheets of roofing and covered the outside of a barn? What are your suggestion?

Snap a chalk line to make a straight and level reference point. Then start your first sheet on the line and use a level on the side to make sure it’s straight. Install self tapping roofing screws (with rubber washer) with a nut driver. Check the vertical level as you go and adjust every couple of sheets as necessary. Stick to your level top line at the top of the panel. If you need to trim a panel due to the barn siding being uneven with windows he ground, trim the panel on the bottom side. If it takes more than one panel to cover the height, do the bottom panel first and overlap the top panel a few inches above the bottom panel.

A friend paid to have his wooden barn covered in metal. You'd think it was a new barn. They had to install some wooden strips on the wooden siding to compensate for the overlaps in the siding.

This is a great idea. Depending on the condition of the surface, you may want to put on nailing strips and shim to get them straight. I would also suggest putting on house wrap over the old surface.

Years ago, we had an ancient shed and got some cheap seconds of grain bin metal (not yet bent). It was a lot of work to cut and drill but after we installed it I think the original structure could have collapsed and the metal would have stayed up.

go for it applying r panels to a wood wall is about the perfect install for r panels or corrugated for that matter.
the house wrap and furring stripps are a great add. leave the ends of the metal open for airflow will help with cooling in the summer.

Start with a straight line at the bottom and then install your rat guard. Then you can stand your vertical sheet on the rat guard and then adjust your plumb. Wouldn't leave the bottom open as that invites mice, snakes and insects into unobtainable places. Sitting on the rat guard will still allow it to breathe if that is your concern.
