Morton Buildings used 6" of stone covered by 2" of sand, then rubber mats, for our stalls. Walls are 2" X 8" tongue and groove, with the bottom boards pressure treated. The side walls have reinforcements. Exposed edges are covered by flashing. We put a couple of bags of shavings in each stall. They are mucked out daily and shavings replaced as needed. In the 14 years we have been here we have never had a horse injury or horse damage to the stalls.

Above that I made the jail cell look but with 2" spacing using 1-1/2" flat strap and 3/8" cold rolled rod. I cut the straps to length and tack welded on the ends to hold in place. Center punched for holes every 2", laid up on the drill press and drilled the holes.

It was a lot of work but bought all of the steel for 4 stalls for less than one pre-made one. I attached a couple of pics to give you a general idea, one including my boy Radar being the camera ham he is. Doesn't look quite as nice 11 years later with all of the Sparrows leaving their mark, but still looks pretty decent.
looks very nice in the pics. I used 1.575” u-channel and 1/2” pipe but I cheated and had my buddy punch out the holes on his ironworker. Definitely cheaper than buying prefab. The u-channel fits the t&g nicely (IMO)

I don’t use rubber mats in stall, ever looked underneath those things after they’ve been used awhile :sick: In my experience, they don’t help with the compaction problems either.

We used 3 inches of crushed stone (fines) under 3/4 inch 4x8 rubber mats for horse stalls. super easy to clean and piss just runs to the nearest seam and down into the sand or stone. after 20 years it's still good.

I have looked and don't have any issues. We have to change them out ever 3-4 years, 1500# horses wear them out and they start to break up. Smooth out the sand, add a little if needed, and put down new mats from TSC. Using shavings helps keep urine from seeping down.
