I think maybe you and Gary are talking about two different things.

I edited my post #49 to bold the parts I was replying to Gary about. "OP" does = Original Poster, yes?

Pics of the "approved" screws vs. "unapproved" screws:

IMG_20161123_142246105 (Large).jpgIMG_20161123_142258187 (Large).jpg

The approved screws are Simpson's SD 9x1 1/2" screw and are gray; the unapproved are standard roofing screws and are green; they also appear to be 9 ga and are also 1 1/2" long. I didn't have another pouch to use on my tool belt, so I just dumped the approved gray with the unapproved green screws and then used them as I grabbed them.

The approved SD screws are about $12/100 while the green unapproved were $15/250 from the roofing steel material company (Discount Metals, Park City, TN). There was no provision to buy the SD screws in bulk that I could see (Home Depot). The vast majority of the woodshed #2 joists now have Simpson galvanized steel wind tie downs on both the front and back of the doubled 2x8 header using a mix of gray approved along with green unapproved screws.

While installing the additional wind tie downs, four screws stripped; all four were the same type screw. Anyone want to take bets on which screw it was? All screws were driven by my Ridgid 18v drill driver.

Don't know what to think/say?

Assuming it was the Simpson screws that stripped? Little impact drivers have alot more torque than the screw can handle, gotta know when to let off. Heck I think my little 18v driver is rated for something like 170 ft-lbs. Which is probably enough to break bolts alot larger than them screws.

Your metal screws have a washer. So unless you were driving them til the washer was completely squished out from under the head, that washer kept you from going too much.

Take one of them washers off the sheet metal screws and I bet you could easily strip or break them too

Oops sorry to leave you hanging, I had forgotten about this thread.

Yes, it was the approved SD screws that all stripped. I installed some more Simpson strong ties, this time on the back side of the header and I still stripped some of the SD screws. none of the green roofing screws stripped. in fact, I don't recall them ever stripping, even when we installed woodshed #1 with 1x4 purloins (I think that's what they're called).

I used up maybe 75(?) SD screws (100 total) and I'm on the last of 5 bags of roofing screws (1250 total), so there won't be any "remove the washer" tests, sorry. :)

And I now have about a half cord of wood already in the new woodshed. The bad news is that it's all poplar; the only tree more useless is the worse-than-useless Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus Altissima). But I cleared out about 20 of them making room for my chicken shak, so I'm gonna put them up as firewood anyway.

And if I haven't said it or haven't said it enough: Thanks For All The Help!!! I really appreciate it.

1x4 purloins (I think that's what they're called).

Pretty sure we all know what you meant, but since you asked

Purloin: verb, to commit theft; steal.
Purlin: noun, a horizontal beam along the length of a roof, resting on a main rafter and supporting the common rafters or boards.

so lose the "o". Part of the problem here is not a lot of computers or phones with spellcheck know builder's terms...I just added "purlin" to the spelling dictionary on this PC.

So GL, what I heard you say is that I stole my purlins? Is that the message you're trying to tell me, did I hear that right???

Man it's Friday night, you're harshing my Skeeter Pee/beer/Pritchard's Rum mellow.

The good news: The new woodshed is starting to get filled, pics tomorrow!

This thread made my day. Most of my day consisted of hanging drywall on my not so good framing skills. I can identify with this thread. Codes? We don't need no stinking codes. And I used freaking drywall screws that chew your hands to hamburger sinking them to the hilt with a 20v Dewalt driver too, so there. My meds have worn off...time for some bourbon. :)
